spyinthesky Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 Remember these from my past paticularly a trip to a 3rd Rd game at Hull in mid 60's with train leaving Soton Docks station at midnight and getting into a freezing and foggy Hull about 7am .Lost 1-0 and not back until 3/4am Sunday morning then up at 6am to do Sunday paper round in pouring rain. Happy Days!! Anyway Football Specials are back on the Agenda. Good news 1st Class carriages so comfort guaranteed Bad news - no booze allowed. Straw poll - Anyone interested in jaunts to Midlands & beyond. Need minimum of 250/300 to make it a goer

Dicko Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 Need minimum of 250/300 to make it a goer I suppose the difference today compared with the mid 60's, is that for a midlands trip, the majority of people will go by car

Give it to Ron Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 Remember the one to Bristol Rovers in '79? The infamous pitch invasion. Frog marched to and from the station in the pouring rain...held back for ages. Ah the good old days.

ericofarabia Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 Two trips spring to mind ... both FA Cup matches from the mid 70's ... WBA 76 cup run, all a bit nawty on the walk (run ) back to Smethick West and the next year at Notts Forest where if I remember rightly we were delayed on the way up and no time to get any beers in Nottingham, straight to the ground (or was it a police escort wouldn't let us go anywhere but the ground?) Thinking about it I can't remember anything about the journeys at all, presume we took our own beers but not sure, and of course nowadays there would be no chance at all. saints triumph Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 2 trips that stick in my mind. 1 was to brighton , the other 1 was to nottingham forest when the train broke down and we got to the ground late only to find forest fans in our bit, we soon changed that. unionhotel Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 Anyone remember going to Bradford for the FA Cup in 76? We were plagued by Leeds supporters, their ground was wired for sound so that they could out-sing us and going out of Bradford our coach was pelted with bricks, with most of the windows smashed! Tried to get a replacement coach but no luck and ended up driving back to Southampton, middle of winter with no windows. We were tough in them days!!! Bradford railway station post match about 6pm Saturday evening - me and a mate trying for a train because the driver and two others in our car were banged up. It was like a scene out of Clockwork Orange as the station was deserted and it was snowing. All of a sudden 20 Leeds fans appeared on the station and it took about 2 seconds for them to realise they had 2 of the enemy trapped. What happened next wasn't nice!!!! The same happened to us in Grimsby in a mini-bus. The f*ckers tried to set fire to us and smashed in the windows at the back. It was a very cold journey back to Kent, 'cos I was the one sat next to the smashed windows and there were no spare seats.

Snowing like crazy, minus 500C, coach got a brick through the back window on the way out the ground. Got dropped off in Salisbury around 3am, luckily I was near the front so didn't get hypothermia. Best train trip - London Saints to Sunderland - we upgraded to First using the weekend special and someone let Stink bombs off - juvenile but funny Derby Train trip for Chris Marsden day was funny. Blimey - EoA went on a train? bet they were steam
suewhistle Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 Didn't do Bradford, but as a student at SU I _was_ a bit short of readies. I had confidence we'd get further after seeing Hughie's last minute goal and going to WBA. Great having no lectures on Wednesdays. Saw the semis and the final. but gawd, my final degree that year was awful!
suewhistle Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 It was Notlob the follwing year, ISTR, when Bobby Stokes scored two and we won. Had to get back to the coaches pretending I was miserable and then sprinting the last 100 yards! Or was that the year before when I was stil a student. Gawd.... feeling old ... sluurp... Hi Dubai, what's the wine like there? Expensive normally Although Al Hamra Cellars had a really good sale on last week. Got 2 bottles of Pouily Fusse 2002 for 39 Dirhams (about 6.50) usual price 276... and got 4 bottles of a nice Haut Medoc reduced from 175 to 30 But tonight it was the Zubrowka and Apple Juice. Shame you're in Italy, they won't have such a large Polish community there so you probably cannot find it, but it is sure catching on here. Yummy But Tomorrow night - London Pride & Marstons Pedigree - The old Le Meridien at Heathrow has a decent pub just opposite, land at 8:15pm will be in there by 9:15pm thanks to IRIS Oh what we DO get down here is Lebanese wine.... OMG knocks spots off anything from EU. Chateau Musar or Chateau Ksara, heck Chris DeBurgh even wrote a song about it. suewhistle Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 Mmm, fave's! Isn't Zubrowka the Bison grass one.. nice.. Those are good sale prices, leave them to rest in the dark for a week ir two. I am atm drinking a moscato di Chambave after various wines earlier... terrible these summer thunderstorms for keeping one in bars. Had a very good glass of red wine in a local bar (Didier Gerbelle Petit Rouge 2007) so now know the same one in my cellar is ready to drink. So is the Pedigree, Adnams and Fullers in my cellar which i use to impress the locals:-)
