OldNick Posted 18 July, 2009 Share Posted 18 July, 2009 for a proper saints museam in the stadium.RL tried to forget any history pre his arrival, we now need the new owners to show they have a grasp of the clubs full history and use the wealth of knowledge we have and actual stuff to build something that shows our past stars.I heard about Charlie Wayman from my father but would not be able to pick a picture of him out and my daughter would not pick out pictures of my heroes as in Ron Davies Micky Channon etc etc. Please Mr Liebherr get it done. I know there are some great fans with mementoes that would be loaned for us to view, i5t justneeds a proper setting.

Whilst I don't think he actually "got it" with regards football and supporters, I don't think he really did forget anything pre his arrival. The Rodrigues medal is one case in point. I'm not sure he totally understood the legacy and what it meant, but I don't think he went for a Year Zero approach (the McMenemy feud was more to do with a clash of egos as opposed to wiping the slate). As for a museum, whilst we obviously haven't got the silverware and success of Man Yoo to exhibit, this is an institution that has played a big role in the city for almost 125 years and so I think there could be a case for it. As you say, I'm sure there must be some great artefacts, memories and momentoes out there that people would share.
ladysaint Posted 18 July, 2009 Share Posted 18 July, 2009 There is plenty of room in the stadium above the Chapel/Itchen stand which was used for storage that could easily have been used for the Museum, as you said RL was jut not interested or even had the money available to do this, they also had stored in there some lovely old photos of Ted and other old players. I'm sure I remember much discussion of this a while back and I'm also sure Cowen showed some interest. Can anyone remember anything about it?? I thought money was an issue, as IMHO this would have to be subsidised as I just don't think it would generate suffcient funds to cover itself. Maybe a team of volunteers to staff it???? A company to sponsor it????

Could just be a temporary thing in one of the suites, few paying visitors few the door should cover costs. I've no idea how much stuff the club has that is wort displaying though. scally Posted 18 July, 2009 Share Posted 18 July, 2009 I did a tour of St James Park a couple of years ago, they have a museum there, its not that big but it does a great job of descibing some of Newcastle's history and famous players. It would be great to have something similar at St Marys.
scott_saints Posted 18 July, 2009 Share Posted 18 July, 2009 Problem is, with all the major trophies we have won over the years, the museum would have to be massive. Oh...

ladysaint Posted 18 July, 2009 Share Posted 18 July, 2009 Its not all about trophies though what about all the young fans who will not remember the Dell, the 1976 cup final win, the promotions etc., players we have lost ie Mills, Hayes, Osgood, Ball etc. those that have gone on to win national acclaim i.e. Shearer, MLT there is a lot of good times to remember. OldNick Posted 18 July, 2009 Author Share Posted 18 July, 2009 the costs of silver polish would not be extortionate of course, but for me seeing our past in the flesh would be great. It is amazing with a few mementos lots of pictures how a good display can be achieved.
rallyboy Posted 18 July, 2009 Share Posted 18 July, 2009 I think some are being mischievous and confusing museums with trophy cabinets... Twenty years ago there was more than enough stuff to fill a boardroom wall at The Dell, pennants and gifts from visiting clubs and tours, minor tournament silverware, add to that old programmes, photos, player-loaned shirts and boots, some multi-media action and interview stuff and you would have a cracking museum. The club has a few well-respected historians to assist, it would really link the post-admin club to the history. A great idea, and not a huge expense I wouldn't have thought. Extended stadium tours - see the ground, learn about the history, buy stuff in the shop, come back on Saturday and spend more, come back for the rest of your life. My concern is that although a good idea in theory after the initial rush to go and visit the place it would become as cobwebbed as the goal McGoldrick used to practice his penalties and BWP used for target practice. A cabinet exists outside of the Boardroom along with players names engraved in wood along the corridors toward the directors box, which I assume people are taken around when on a stadium tour, accept it is not easily accessible to all but much is on display, agree the scope is there to add alot more with access to all
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 18 July, 2009 Share Posted 18 July, 2009 Apart from Duncan Holley and all the Hagiology folk it would pay someone to talk to Herbie Taylor, the stadium tour guide, he has a wealth of knowledge which could be drawn upon. Ewell Posted 18 July, 2009 Share Posted 18 July, 2009 Hagiology Publishing and specifically David Bull, Herbie the tour guide from Saints List would all have to be involved in this project. What these chaps do not know about our football clubs past is not worth knowing. Once we are up and running this should be done a.s.a.p. before there expertise and knowledge is gone. It is a great idea. It does not have to be big but just has to be something that celebrates Southampton Football Club, its past, present and future. The knowlegde these guys have is phenomenal and it's a good thing their books have been written (although I think there's still more to tell) and along with people like Herbie, then I think there's every need for them to be heavily involved. benjii Posted 18 July, 2009 Share Posted 18 July, 2009 Can we have a tribute to the miserable old git who used to marshall the car parking at The Dell?
