Saints Brand

In the good old days of takeover talk, there was a suggestion of an international Saints brand linking several football clubs across the world.

Perhaps there is merit in this idea as I followed one of these lorries up the M271 today

But perhaps the brand should be different types of businesses rather than just football.

I don't really care for the idea of a brand of 'Saints' temas around the world, such as Red Bull.

To push our 'brand' we need to start in our own backyard and start reclaiming the area around Southampton and get supporters back. I always thought a poster/billboard campaign should be spread throughout South Hampshire like the old Strong's beer's: 'This is Strong's Country'.

I think you will find the lorry company is totally separate to Saints FC. It's based by Heathrow off the M25. For us Londoners- we see it all the time...

Anyway on the international brand idea- lets be realistic. We are in League One, we are tiny, whilst we have a relatively wealthy owner, we have limited international appeal. Lets focus on getting things right in our own backyard first, in terms of how the club is run, how it communicates with fans and other stakeholders and let's get the building blocks in place for development. Then once that has been achieved, lets think about international opportunities- not before.

Agreed, start with our own backyard first. Back in the day I liked the Echo posters proclaiming Hampshire as "Le God's County" :)

Well, Sheffield United are running a 'World Brand' thing, not sure what benefits it is giving them mind. At the moment they own and run 'Chengdu Blades' in China and they also, somehow own Ferencvaros.

Crystal Palace also have a team in the US Second devision. Not sure if thats working at all for them.

I would rather see the 'core' club grow then waste money on aquiring other teams.

Poster and billboard campaigns are still pretty effective these days and the Strong's strapline you mention is a great example of a geographic location being related to a brand. We definitely should be branding ourselves on the south coast again through good and effective mediums like billboards.

In 2001 I put forward to RL the idea of having "Welcome to Southampton-Home of the Saints" put on all the major roadways into the city. I think a request was subsequently put out by the club and they asked fans to support this by contacting the city council. Alas, not enough support was garnered.

A cheaper way of branding would be to create a new, effective strapline and get it put on car window stickers to be given away free to supporters. The club did this really well in 2001 and showed all following motorists that "Saints IS the South". Even the Blue Few recognised the large numbers of Saints fans coming into their traditional strongholds by the numbers of cars that were driving around the PO post code area sporting the slogan. Car stickers are not everybody's cup of tea, but as a medium are cheap to make, easy to distribute and are highly mobile/visual

Anyway, going back to the initial billboard idea, what do people think of "Welcome to the Saints Coast!" as a potential fixed slogan? With the word "Saints" here replacing and representing the word "South" ie the inference that Saints (AKA SFC) is the primary and most important element on the South Coast. That should put Poopey in their place and give us a dollop of good heart again.

Any one else??

We have little chance of branding SFC whilst the Council has traffic signs saying "For football ground follow O" (with O being a football)

(I may be blaming the wrong people and it could be Hampshire transport but as Poopey have signs for PFc I doubt it.

I seem to remember the DoT stopping SCC putting up signs where the generic footballs had halos above them.

Let's establish ourselves as at least a top 6 CCC club before we embark on any of this b* llocks.

Winning football matches is the only reliable marketing exercise for football clubs. All the billboards in Hampshire won't make a difference to gates if we're sixth from bottom in League One for two years in a row.

Oh come on CB Fry, "Welcome To The South Coast" billboards are guaranteed to get us into the top 6 in the Prem, let alone the CCC. Admittedly we might need to be a bit smarter with our billboards to become champions of Europe but you need to wise up to reality and get behind the team etc...

It's people like you who will ruin this club. Unforgivable.

I never liked Saints is the South, although I had one on my car, it always seemed grammatically incorrect. Also I got my tyre slashed on a back street in Tottenham whilst sporting the sticker.

However I like your Saints Coast, only the really miserable amoungst us wouldn't like it.

I can't believe what I am reading here.

Billboards won't deliver success long term.

The only way we can possibly push on the next level is through bus stop posters.

I actually came up with the Saints is the South strapline. RL sanctionned it himself (nice chap). Appreciate that you didn't like it; fair comment. It wasn't meant to be gramatically correct. That's the point, it was meant to be quirky (Saints was meant to reference SFC [therefore a singular entity]).

Sorry you felt it caused your tyres to be slashed in Tottenham. I live about 3-4 miles from WHL and still sport my car back window. Never ever had any probs from the Spuds.

Still think a bit of chest beating branding would give people a lift, regardless of what happens on the pitch.

We are a football club. Nothing more. All this talk of 'brands' and the 'product' makes me wonder what a few of you are in it for. Is it to be associated with a trendy brand and an awesome product, or is it to follow a team you care about?

They have always been my lucky charm on the way round the M25 from Kent down to SMS. The more "Saints" lorries I see, the greater our margin of victory. It's worked well for me, I feel.... :-)

I agree, living in Sout East London/kent I always liked driving around with a Saints sticker on the car, hense why I had yours on even though I had a problem with the grammar (I did understand where it was coming from though). I only assumed the sticker singled the car out, Saints were playing THFC that day and it had been parked in Lewisham all the time with out a a hint of trouble. Also had two spurs fans in the car with me.
