Wildgoose Posted 2 August, 2009 Share Posted 2 August, 2009 Great article about Sir Alex inviting AP to Manchester for three days, when he was out of work, to see how the whole club works.......very interesting insight

lordswoodsaints Posted 2 August, 2009 Share Posted 2 August, 2009 there's some conflicting stories going on here..... There's a 5 year plan, then there is 2 plans for this season,1 to eradicate the ten points within 4 months?? Then try and push for a playoff place in the next 4 months?? It's not a 5 year plan then,it sounds more like a 'hit and hope' plan to me What happened to a top two finish?

Lol :-0 Though I agree it could sound that way. Rather I think he means that it might take 4 months to play catchup with the pack before making a push for the playoffs etc which seems entirely reasonable doesn't it? AP has said he's ideally like to be shot of the -10 after 5 games. That might be a bit hopeful though.....
lordswoodsaints Posted 2 August, 2009 Share Posted 2 August, 2009 What  You've lost me. 'our immediate plan is to get rid of the -10 points, then see how long we have got left.if it's 3 or 4 months we can have a go at the play offs,I'm not aiming any higher than that.' This suggests to me that he is happy for us to play catch up for half a season and then see how it goes from there. This is not what I expected from somebody who wants a top two finish. AP: "Our immediate plan is get rid of this minus 10 points, then see how long we have got left. If it's three or four months we can have a go at the play-offs. I'm not aiming higher than that." No conflict there. We are starting a long way behind the rest of the field remember, so the "immediate plan is get rid of this minus 10 points" i.e. catch up with the bunch. "Then....". One follows the other.

You have to be realistic though. To get into the play offs this year would be a great achievement from -10. If we are mid-table at Christmas we can give that target a real go, if not then its just consolidation and building for next season, thats not lack of ambition its real life. The real target must be for next season to have a real go at ****ing this league !! But they cant come out and say, "well thanks for the 10500 plus season tickets, but actually dont expect too much this year will you cos its probably just us preparing for next season !! teamsaint Posted 2 August, 2009 Share Posted 2 August, 2009 the club needs to plan PROPERLY for the future. That means a little patience, as well as money.

" I am realistic all the time on here but people can't accept reality and they try and rip my arse off :-) Last season in this league you could probably scrape the playoffs on about 70 points,so with our -10 that would be 80 points, that's about 2 points per game....not impossible but very very unlikely....not forgetting there are a lot of big clubs now in l1 all trying to do the same as us with better bigger squads. I would love it if we did but miracles are far and few between these days in football.
dellgirl Posted 2 August, 2009 Share Posted 2 August, 2009 Realism and blind support is what is needed from us this season, everything else will be dealt with upstairs. Many of our rivals in this league will come to St Marys like children going to a sweetie factory and will be jealous and think we are already "up ourselves"and probably clog us to death, I am expecting quite heavy injuries,Arsenal it will not be. Like the owner we are investing in the future of our club by buying season tickets,it is an act of intent to support our club that we SO nearly lost..so please get behind everyone who has our best interests at heart ,it may not be the quick fix we would all like but like a good marriage lets work at it and bring confidence, support, warmth and love back to St Marys and then everyone will flourish. We are the first to knock the fickleness of other fans, don't let us get on their bandwagon.

Actually what we need are two of the bigger clubs with big squads to tear this league apart and amass as many points as they can. By doing that they would make the number of points required to make 6th place - and in real terms that is surely the best we could hope to achieve - a lot less than it would be if its a tight league with 6 or 7 teams vying for the top two places

Pat from Poole Posted 2 August, 2009 Share Posted 2 August, 2009 That makes no sense. It makes a lot of sense to me. If two teams run away with automatic promotion, then the likelihood is that you'll have a number of teams just below bunched on much lower points totals and there's more scope for a team having to make up a -10 points situation to be able to still sneak into the top 6. I agree. Actually, if 3 or 4 teams are way, way ahead of the rest, this suits us. I don't think we have any realistic chance of automatic promotion, so we want the race for the final play-off places to be amongst v mediocre teams with very modest points totals. I think we have a reasonable chance of chalking up 70 points (80, minus 10), but we need the 5th/6th/7th slots to be on low points totals for that to be enough to get us into the playoffs. beatlesaint Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 That makes no sense. Of course it does....there are only so many points available in a League each season and if 2 teams get shed loads its obvious the other teams wont get so many !! Matthew Le God Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 Why is that better than Southampton being one of those teams that runs away with it? If Saints do aswell as Leicester did last season they would come 3rd. 1 point away from 2nd place and automatic promotion.
