Style

It's too early to tell. Pardew likes good football, played on the ground etc etc but he'll also know what it takes to get out of this division. That will be his priority. When it comes to getting a CB I doubt we'll be going for the ball playing type who will bring it out of defence - we'll have a tough fella who'll lump it away from danger.

I would say the style of football will be "effective" and that means winning games or avoiding defeat. How that happens will be determined by who is available and who we're playing. For example if we get a pacy striker then we can expect a more route one style with Lambert getting the flick ons. If we've got Rasiak and Lambert up front then expect a more patient build up with the midfield expected to push on and provide a runner or two.

Reluctantly long ball when necessary, and probably more out of lack of confidence or familiarity with a new manager's style of play. Most of the time last night the midfield were trying to get it down on the ground, but it wasn't always possible. Murty and Harding both look as if they want to start play from the back - didn't always work out, though: Kelvin not always taking that option, and Lallana wasn't linking up with Harding well at all. Murty and James looked much better, but were now and again thwarted by something clever (from Murty) just not going to plan.

Give it a few more games. It *will* be good to watch.

my neck did get a bit sore on saturday, but it was hardly wimbledon/derby style. more direct when they had men behind the ball and less direct when there was space to move into or when we won possession back in midfield. he certainly liked his wingers to stand off when they had it - so as not to get caught out by millwall's overlapping full backs. a very methodical and cautious game is probably fair to say. wingers created a 4-2-4 when we were hitting the long ball as well which seemed to work well - less box to box balls and more diagonals which are easier to win.

will probs get more adventurous should we sign a more attacking minded CM to replace wotton or move lalanna there and get a LM (altho saying that, i thought wotton was a good leader - just didn't play as well as schneiderlan).

A CB and a LM plus a couple of other 'squad players' and we should walk this league IMO. Might need another fairly average L1 striker or 2 as well, should the poles decide to move on.

I haven't seen us hit a long ball all season. I saw a few hefty clearances, but that's fair enough. Attacking with balls from the wings, and especially yesterday a lot of link play and low crosses into the box. Once they figure out Lambert's 6'3" and hangs around at the back to outjump fullbacks we'll hit a few more in the air too...

I thought Lallana and Harding worked well together, though it was mainly Harding's doing, as he was putting all the work in, without overlapping, just working hard to be available. Lallana just seems to want to jog with the ball until he can beat someone half the time, rather than do something effective with it.

Hopefully whatever 'style' of football we play will reflect on who we are playing. For example, a team packed with tall, strong players will mean that hitting balls up to Lambert and co will generally be ineffective (even though Lambert is undoubtedly good in the air). On the other hand, teams seemed to realise how poor and vunerable we were in the air last season and teams therefore often adopted a different 'style' when playing us as they knew they could win the aerial battles. I don't think one style of play should be adopted and stuck to no matter who the oppostion are - JP did this last season and refused to mix things up and we became predictable and easy to counter. Surely we have scouts who scout the opposition before a game and therefore, after being informed of how an opposition team plays, we should adapt our gameplan and 'style of play' in order to counter that team and gain the advantage over them tactically.

It is 4-4-2 and everybody seems to know what they are required to do !

(Nb. this is the first time in a very long time that you have heard this from me) !

So far it has not exactly been flowing football but equally neither has it been kick and rush!

The attitude seems right and I get the impression that the players realise there is no room for slackers (even Rasiak) !

I reckon that it will take some more time before we can define the actual 'style' but I do sense positive progress in the overall approach to competitive games !!

What struck me about Lambert last night was how many times he wanted the ball to feet and we never gave it. Give him the ball to feet on the edge of the area and he will hurt teams. He was screaming for the ball to feet at times, hopefully with more training and gelling with the team he'll get it.

But as others have pointed out, it's nice to have a ball into the channels, direct or even long ball when necessary. If we can mix it up all the better as we won't be seen as one dimensional.
