deadpanmatt Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 ...that assuming the Jaidi deal goes through, Pardew will have signed an entirely new back four for us since becoming manager, not to mention a new 'spine' in the case of Hammond and Lambert. When we were in the Championship (all that time ago), I would have done anything for that. It seems to me that the resources are pretty much there now, we just have to make it gel and get into the winning mentality.

polegategavin Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Good point. Although i am sure Thomas and Perry will still be involved Selected as the NOTW right back in the team of the week. I realise we are talking about a tabloid paper however most comments for the match against Stockport highlighted a very good performance from him in that position, and he played right back for Burnley for the majority of his time there, and when we signed him as a "centre back" the Burnley forums were puzzled. So it is very useful to have him as back up for both right back and centre back. I would not be surprised to see a back 4 of; Harding - Jaidi - Trottman - Thomas and I for one will be delighted with this and firmly believe that this back 4, and Murty slotting in once fit, will keep more clean sheets than not for the next 5 months, giving us the base from which to start winning games. I heard last night, whilst watching the Newcastle - Leicester match that Leicester last season went 23 games unbeaten. There is no reason that we can't from mid September, lets say, go on this kind of run, and then find ourselves in the play off positions by easter next year. We have a really decent squad of players now and I see no reason why we cant put up a strong challenge for the play-offs this year. That back four, with Kelvin behind them wouldnt concede too many in the Championship, nevermind League 1. My only concern would be up front, but if Saga stays and is up for the fight we should be ok....
Toadhall Saint Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Any managers main aim has to be not conceeding goals - our new back four should go a long way to acheiving that aim. The only concern (for me anyway) is the lack of a creative MF but I'm sure AP will get in more players to fill those gaps. Onwards & Upwards. Genk Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 The new back four gives me much more confidence now in games but it is gutting that Murty is out for weeks as he was looking solid. I now think that right back position is going to be where opposition goals come from because Lloyd James isn't good enough at that position. Also on another topic, I only think we need a winger on loan to complete our team. With a pacey right winger, surely Lallana could play in the hole (AM) which i understand is his actual position? I can see him playing much better there compared to the right wing. Thoughts?
david in sweden Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Wingers? " Wingers " YES, I remember them. Didn't we used to have them back in the 1960's ? I remember watching Paine and Sydenham at the Dell..they were wingers weren't they ? Haven't seen anything to touch them since. All we get now are " overlapping full backs" who often get caught upfield and leave the defence wide open.

Just think back to the end of 2003 when we had Dodd, Claus, Svensson and Le Saux/Higginbotham (in front of Niemi, rather than Jones for preference), that was pretty well the last decent defensive back row we had. Then when Svensson was injured, Dodd retired, Claus was getting on and less good without Svennson beside him, we got steadily worse. It was criminal really that a manager of Burley's experience never properly addressed the situation, buying up midfielder after midfielder and playing many out of position in defence. At long last, we not only have a decent back four playing in their proper positions, but also some cover for injuries. It is not because we now have some money; it is because we have a manager who realises the importance of a defence and a spine. Tighter funding availability is not an excuse for wasting money on too many players for the midfield at the expense of the defence.
Bailey Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 It's a decent team on paper, especially for League One. All we need now is a winger and a striker and we'll be looking quite strong. Davis Murty - Jaidi - Trotman - Harding Lallana - Hammond - Schneiderlin - Mills Saganowski - Lambert Subs: Bialkowski, Thomas, Perry, Gillett, Thomson, Holmes, Paterson It's good to see we've got options at the back now. Thomas can come in at RB whilst Murty is injured, Perry is more than capable of playing alongside either Trotman or Jaidi and Mills can fill in at LB if Harding suffers an injury. Pardew has worked hard to bring in a new spine to our team, and with Davis, Jaidi, Hammond and Lambert, the foundations are in place, it's just a case of getting the finishing touches to our side now. Once we start to gel, and there are definitely signs that that's beginning to happen, then we will be a decent side in this division.

Regardless to the wanted addition of another winger and striker, that team should NOT struggle in this League. P.S, this isn't a 'Pardew out' jibe. Chez Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 I would not be surprised to see a back 4 of; Harding - Jaidi - Trottman - Thomas at last we have a back four capable of handling oponents long ball game. With Lambert, Patterson and Hammond all adding height we should be safe as houses at set peices. Lets hope we don't start to get undone by pace now. I can see Pardew prefering him to Morgan in midfield, especially in away games. Morgan's not suited to playing mudbaths!
