Looking at it, it is a bit naff that 40 teams are left in at round 2, meaning 20 left in for round 3 when the "big boys" enter the fray. That makes the likelihood of one of our gruesome bunch making it to the 1/4 finals basically nil. Hardly a fair competition is it. Maybe it should be the other way round? Or am I talking ****...

That's where we are at the moment! We never gave it a second thought until this season because we were one of the "big boys."

i was thinking exactly the same. perhaps everybody should come in for round 2. everybody likes to see big teams against little teams anyway; that's where the excitement lies in this competition and what sets it apart from the others.

But it does increase the chances that a 'little team' can make it through to a tie at one of the 'big boys'. Like most other people, I suspect, I never used to think much about the FA Cup rounds 1 & 2 and all the mattered was who we got in the third round. It does feel strange, though, not having to worry about getting a match at Old Trafford just because we desperately needed the money. Let some other desperate team get that - like Pompey. :D

Bringing the 'big boys' in at the 2nd round would give more little teams the opportunity of getting a match against one of the 'big boys', not decrease them.

The main argument against would come from the the big teams who would claim that they already play too many fixtures.

Oh great, last thing we want is an influx of 2,000 gobby dribblers rattling their buckets at us, pleading 'save the cherries'

Don't think the gobby ones would come anywhere near St Marys TBH!

bournemouth = portsmouth's little sister

Not sure I agree with that either. Bournemouth = decent place to live; P*mpey = sh!thole!!

Now you've got me thinking.... At present 20 teams go through from round 2 to join 44 big-boys in round 3 where they will have a probability of 19 in 63 of meeting one of them, so about 70%. If those 44 were to appear in round 2 there would be a total of 128 teams so 84 would be 'little' ones each having a probability of 83 in 127 of meeting a big-boy, i.e. about 35%. But there would be more little-boys in the draw. My head hurts now so I will leave it as an exercise to the reader to calculate the most-likely number of little-boy/big-boy matches in each scenario. I'm off to Argos before they close.

(I think you must be right, though. A 2nd round draw with 84:44 little:big teams must mean a greater number of big on little meetings)

Not so much a social, commercial, residential or economical reference I have to add - I guess what I'm trying to say is the little sister keeps herself a bit cleaner than the bigger, older fish-smelling one but is equally dislikeable.
