Seeing that the Skates have got them in the cup, it takes me back to when we played them (I assume it is the team we played in the late 60's early 70's)

All I recall from the night is walking to the game from school in pouring rain, the rain getting worse us losing on away goals (?) and then getting a boll#### for staying there and getting absolutely soaked during the game and on the walk home with my brother..My mum put rolled up paper in my shoes hoping to get a lot of the damp out as I had school the next day.Boy was it uncomfortable wearing those damp shoes the next day. Only one pair of schoolshoes in those days, they were Clarks bought in St Marys Street.

Funny you recall the rain but not the match and the result. We won 5-1 at home!!! I was there, brilliant night (l don't recall the weather though). That was the most disappointing European run, because we ended up going out to Newcastle on away goals, after 2 draws. To lose on away goals is bad enough but against another English team and without losing either game was a bit of a ****er.

The result I must have mixed up in my head with the Newcastle game as I mentioned going out on away goals. The rain I remember vividly.I was only 10 or 11 and so time blurs some of these things. Was the Newcastle 0-0 away and 1-1 home? I know it something like that. Europe to me at that time didnt seem to have the importance that the FA cup did, but as I was only a kid I wouldnt have understood if it meant much then

The Portugese players were put off that evening because they weren't used to playing under floodlights!

In the home game with Newcastle both sides wore stripes. As the home side we were meant to change but didn't understand the rule. As Eric Martin walked off at the end a firework was thrown on the pitch and it went off in his face.

Also in the first round away against Rosenberg Trondheim we became the first ever English side to lose a leg to a Norwegian side. At that time it was expected that you would hammer a team of Norwegian part timers 10-0. But we won the return 2-0.

I remember the Eric Martin incident now you mention it. The Rosenberg game was our first in Europe Ithink.

Typical Saints not knowing the rules about the kits.Nowadays they just go to the store and get a set of away kit but in those days we were not so privilaged to have them to hand so easily. That is why there ar no Saints shirts signed by the players about as they were rarely given away.

Just reminiscing, others on here would have been at the game and they may also recall that very wet night.

I used to stand below the scoreboard in the Archers corner in those days.

I do recall the game and wearing my bycycle cape to keep me dry.

I also recall standing next to someone who was convinced that we were doing so well because the VP players had never seen rain as "it has never rained in Portugal".

Supporters were not so well travelled in those days.

The night of the Newcastle game was full of crowd trouble if i remember correctly

I recall seeing Dougal in the Dell car park after the match taking on about a dozen old bill who were trying to restrain and wrestle him to the ground. It was an awsome sight and he was one strong guy. I think our then leader was trying to get to the Archers from the Milton.

This could turn into a Soul Cellar type thread!

I remember the first game against the Portugese lot - anyone who says he can't remember it raining must be mad. It threw it down form start to finish - everything was wet! From memory I was surprised it got played at all...I remember getting there early and standing on the Archers. Did it stop at all during the game? Even I can't remember that - the score though 5-1, but I can't remeber who scored! Come on anoraks!

Then that infamous Newcastle game - 0-0 at SJP and then 1-0 care of a Channon header in the opening minutes. Newcastle equalised to go through on away goals rule. I seem to remember Eric Martin having some exploding firework thrown at him that night too. What a bang I swear he went as white as a sheet. Don't remember the crowd trouble that night - perhaps I was too young!

Famous European nights at The Dell - who can forget Anderlecht? The atmosphere was immense we clawed our way back in to the game - and then Jim Steele got robbed playing silly bugg*rs on the halfway line.

A great night - but the greatest night for me was Channon's Testemonial. The whole place absolutely buzzed with excitement, the FA Cup win and all that.

There is somthing about being a Saints fan that makes you so happy - memories of a bygone era. Glory boy here only grew up with Division 1 football, suffered relegation and then all the great years with Lawrie, Keegan, Le Tiss...

Just remember all things are cyclic - we'll have our day again!

Yorkie we used to get to the turnstiles at the Archers hours before they opened so we could get to the front right behind the goal, freezing cold we waited and then have to smile meekly as a father squeezed his kid in a minute before kick off.

There are so many memories flooding back of being behind the goal. A lad who was a friend as a kid who is a steward at the main entrance now being punched by a Man u fan for no reason. How Jackson the Palace keeper (cant recall his first name) did something that got the fans backs up and the abuse he took got to him and he let in 6. Or the comments Bob Wilson got after he broke Hugh Fishers leg when he came and dived at his feet (Hughie was never the same player again)

Gordon West in the practice before we played Everton and he went into the net to pick a ball up and me shouting to him 'that's right get some practice' and him looking up at me with a killing stare and then he smiled. It soon went as we scored in the first few minutes and I said it again.I didnt get the same response but Everton went on and beat us soundly. Some of my happiest days of my life there with my oldest brother and a few mates.

Ah yes the Newcastle game. On the way home going over the Chapel Rail Bridge I jumped for one of the overhead metal bars, slipped and hit my head.

Severe concussion so much so I had forgotted I had taken my English 'O' Level the day before.

The following day was a Physics 'O' Level which I had failed miserably twice before. I passed it so it must have knocked some sense into me. Perhaps I should revisit old grounds :)

Happy days

Anorak alert :smt103

Davies 2 (1 pen), Channon, Gabriel and og

I don't recall the rain, but then I am also mad

I seem to remember the Anderlecht game was also very wet, or perhaps I am mixing the two up, weather wise.

Funnily enough when I was in Guimaraes during Euro 2004 for the Bulgaria v Italy game it absolutely lobbed it down non-stop for about 12 hours and the whole place was awash, one of the wettest games I've ever been to (along with Saints v Villa circa 1992 and Newport County v Blackpool in the FA Cup the week Brett Ormerod left Blackpool to sign for Saints).
