kpturner Posted 10 January, 2010 Share Posted 10 January, 2010 It really was an incredible achievement to win it wasn't it... The semi-final ? I don't think so. The final? Yes it was an incredible achievement - it was the moment I realised, as a 13 year old, that we had a local team worth watching every week. But why is your thread entitled "The Press have always had it in for us"?

Jimmy_D Posted 10 January, 2010 Author Share Posted 10 January, 2010 The game that had its name taken By Norman Fox After all of the historic notes and romantic notions had been presented ad nauseum, it was almost possible to believe that the FA Cup semi-final tie between Crystal Palace and Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday was to be something much more grand that the "losers' match". But the game quickly revealed itself as the largely incoherent ramblings of two teams of limited ability and one must hope, for the sake of healthy competition that Southampton, winners by 2-0, can play a great deal better at Wembley. Crystal Palace, attempting to become the first third division team to reach the final, deserved a fair hearing, having had a considerably harder journey to the semi final stage than Southampton. On the day, however, they were firmly of the third division and probably it was kinder to their ambitions to be beaten here rather than degraded at Wembley. There's the first paragraph of the article. 'Tis probably not working now because they haven't got a server able to cope with all of us looking at the same time lol. And I meant winning the final! Just meant that it was an incredible acheivement after we'd been put down so far after the semi final. As for the press have always had it in for us... my memories go back as far as Southampton always being favourites to go down, and seems that it hadn't changed since way back then.... Horribly generalised I know, and I guess I've got far too much into the habit of being sardonic, but that doesn't come across too well on the Internet. Some journalists are condescending in their attitude - but it's an easy thing for them to do when comparing teams in different divisions. [Go and check some of the comments about Luton Town made on here, for example.] It doesn't indicate, though, that those lazy journalists "have always had it in for us". That was my point. What is so contentious about that first paragraph that proves "the press have always had it in for us". Looks like a report suggesting two pretty poor teams in a poor match. It probably was. Being that Saints were playing a club from the division below how was beating Crystal Palace "an incredible achievement"? And if you are talking about winning the final, I am not sure how you expect a journalist writing a contemporary report about the semi to know that we had won the freaking final. He's a journalist, not Doctor Who. Possibly the most pathetic thread ever.

So finding an interesting historical article and bringing it to the attention of fellow Saints fans, albeit with a badly worded title, is more pathetic than wondering whether we'll get taken over or taken off of teletext first then?
