Next season's team of the season

Although you need balance, motivation, tactics etc etc you won't go far wrong in a season if you have the best player in each position playing for you.

Which saints players, if they have a good season, do you think could be the best in their position?

KD

rb

Fonte

Jaidi

Dickson

Puncheon

Schneiderlin

Hammond

Lallana

Lambert

Barnard

Admittedly Dickson is based on comments from his club rather than me knowing much about him.

Hammond looked good when we first signed him but don't think he runs games enough.

So if we sign a top RB, maybe another CB, someone like Bailey - we wouldn't be far off, would we?

Dickson is a good signing because he's a few years younger than Harding and is is cheap gamble as he may have the potential to go all the way. Harding definitely won't go all the way, probably not even to the Championship as first choice. As for the team of the season I think you are spot on although I have a feeling we may well get a top striker to put pressure on L & B ( hopefully Austin!!).

I'm sure the RB we sign will be great too and the CM will certainly be better than Hammond!! I reckon the other signing will be an experienced CB so after all that we could possibly have the best in every single position!!!

Davis, Harding, Fonte, Puncheon, Morgan, Lallana and Lambert will all be in with a shout if they can stay fit.

Barnard isn't anywhere near good enough to be the second best striker in the league over a season, I have serious doubts he's the second best striker in our squad.

Just out of interest who was the the LB in the team of year last season?

What makes you think Dickson is better than Harding?

I'm sure he will turn out to be a decent signing but to suggest he's got the potential to go further than Harding is a bit strange, I mean Harding has proven he can cut it in the Championship, I doubt any of us have seen enough of Dickson to see if he's good enough to be a top CCC left back or even a Premiership left back which would be higher than Harding has played.

Harding will be first choice with Dickson providing cover and playing in the cup games and the easier home games.

If Harding was really that good he would have been snapped up by a Championship club last summer.he isn't going to improve very much but because of his age Dickson could improve more. Let's see in two years!!

like saying fonte is not that good or lambert is not that good..

It's not actually. Fonte has stands out from the rest EVERY single game and has actually done it at higher level. Lambert is brilliant at League 1 and should be in Champ but we don't actually know yet. Harding however was inconsistent at best early season and although he was good in the 2nd half of the season he doesn't stand out for me. He probably is too good for League 1 but only average in the Championship! As I said, let's see!

I think Barnard's goal tally speaks for himself. I guess his delightful header against Yeovil in the dying seconds wasn't anywhere near good enough for you either?

He's a very good league one player but I don't think he's as good as Connolly or Lambert and that's just at Southampton. I'm sure there will be a few decent strikers again next season who will score more than him.

His goal tally was very good, I'm not knocking him I just don't think he has it in him to be one of the best two strikers in the league next season.

Blimey, the season finishes and all of a sudden we're slagging off Harding who was easily one of our best players last season and Barnard who came in at a time when we were short on strikers and scored quite a few goals to push us closer to the play-offs! This place is f*cking mental! Suppose you'll be saying that Rickie was crap last season and we should sign somebody else instead next...

It's not bull**** it's my honest assesment from what I saw. He gave the ball away too often and was caught in possesion. BUT he improved to what I would guess is his near maximum level, hence Dickson "may" well be better long term from a development point of view

I have never understood why fans get so hung up on a player if the club buy someone better....surely that's what matters??!!!

Agreed. We get a new guy in and half the people on here forget who WE voted 2nd in our player of the season poll.

I'm clearly in the minority here but he wasn't my 2nd best player. Llalana was btw. And clearly Pardew wants another good lb (as oppossed to Mills) and all I've said is that dickson is probably a better long term bet.

What's with the love in for Harding, he's not been here long!!!

He might not have been here long but his performances last season were top drawer, I can barely remember him having a poor game. Hope signing Dickson doesn't mean Harding will be leaving as the echo hinted the other day, would be a big mistake as Harding is the best LB in League 1 IMO.

Wasn't there a game where Harding was surprisingly left out, and Pardew wouldn't say why? A couple of games before he was first put in at right back, I think it was. Perhaps there has been an ongoing issue in Pardew's mind about Harding since then, which may or may not be a football one. Anyone actually hear anything about what the problem was?

He then put him back in for the rest of the season and he was better than ever, so I don't think that incident has got anything to do with it.

I was surprised we signed a left back as thought Harding had a good season.

There have been commens that Dickson offers more pace / attacking threat as teams are likely to sit back against us.

If Dickson is better he should replace Harding -

But right back is the priority, so it is still rather odd. Harding is no right back - he played well there once. If I remember rightly he had another go and it wasn't as successful.

So I wouldn't be quite so quick to assume that just because he played left back for the rest of the season, all was rosy. After all, who else would you have played, given that we were trying for the playoffs?

It could be as simple as AP wants competition in that position, but I just have a feeling there is something else going on.
