Marsdinho Posted 14 July, 2010 Share Posted 14 July, 2010 (edited) Hi, On August 13th I will be attempting to walk the Borem Deathmarch, which is 100km in under 24 hours. I hope to raise as much money as possible for the charity Myeloma UK (http://www.myeloma.org.uk/Page.aspx?pid=420) The reason why I have chosen this charity is because about 2 months ago my Dad was diagnosed with Myeloma (bone marrow cancer). He is about to undergo a bone marrow and stem cell transplant which will hopefully get him on the road to recovery. Once he eventually gets out of hospital his immune system will be shot to pieces, and as a result, he won’t be able to attend a single game this season (he's a massive saints fan and has been going to The Dell / SMS for the last 55 years...) Obviously, our main concern is for him to get better, but the prospect of missing one of best seasons ever is not helping his morale. I hope to raise as much money as possible for Myeloma UK and to try and put a smile on his face. I appreciate that times are hard, but every donation counts. You can donate via the following link http://www.justgiving.com/borem2010 Many thanks.... Matt PS: Mods, I would be very grateful if this was a sticky for a few weeks, thanks Edited 14 July, 2010 by Marsdinho

oxfordshire_saint Posted 19 July, 2010 Share Posted 19 July, 2010 Good luck, I've done Trailwalker which is also 100k (Petersfield to Brighton) and it took me just over 24 hours, you've certainly got your work cut out to do it in under 24! All I can say is that first and foremost, make sure you've got decent footwear and socks, your feet will thank you for it! Hope it all goes well

angelman Posted 22 July, 2010 Share Posted 22 July, 2010 Best of luck to you and I hope this (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-10717922) doesn't happen to you. 100km in 24 hours - that is an average of 2.6mph, which is a pretty quick walk over 24 hours. Do you have to jog/run some of it?
Marsdinho Posted 23 July, 2010 Author Share Posted 23 July, 2010 Best of luck to you and I hope this (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-10717922) doesn't happen to you. 100km in 24 hours - that is an average of 2.6mph, which is a pretty quick walk over 24 hours. Do you have to jog/run some of it? The rules state that you can either walk, speedwalk, nordic walk or jog. Im obvioulsy just looking to finish the thing, hopefully under 24 hours. The way training has been going, im looking to do it in around 22 hours, although I havent yet walked for longer that 10 hours. We start at 9pm on the 13th....god knows how fast I'll be going at 9am the following morning, and thats only half way !!!!! Ill be carrying a GPS transponder, so those of you that are mildly interested in my progress can check this website http://www.dodentocht.be/en on the day. cheers for the donations so far. Marsdinho Posted 16 August, 2010 Author Share Posted 16 August, 2010 (edited) UPDATE: Finished the walk in 22 hours 58 mins @ an average of 4.4km's per hour. The last 30km's were f**king terrible. Everything is telling you to stop, but you have to carry on. The last 10km's I was a broken man, I had gone both physically and mentally, i just wanted to collapse by the side of the road and burst into tears. I was a bit emotional when i crossed the finish line. My feet are in pieces, I have blisters all over the place and I'm probably going to lose one of my toenails. Spent 6 hours in A&E last night as I thought I may have had a stress fracture, but turns out i have a grade 3 sprained ankle, basically Ive f**ked all of my tendons / ligaments. Im glad I did it, but will NEVER do anything like that again. Thanks everyone for the support. Some of you have never met me, yet you decided to support me, for that I am eternally grateful. Edit: Here's the proof !!! http://tracking.dodentocht.be/Defaulten.aspx?s=8755 Edited 17 August, 2010 by Marsdinho
