Dr Who? Posted 5 September, 2010 Share Posted 5 September, 2010 I have been thinking about this today as I mentioned that perhaps we could get a very high class of manager. I am pinning all this on when we signed KK out of the blue. What prior to the internet forum would have got you so excited or shocked enough about Southampton Football Club to post on a forum? Or back then write to the Echo!! Mine would have been the sacking of Chris Nicholl as manager after a top 7 finish and then not improving on it the year after with a mid table top flight finish!!! Oh what I would do for that now. What would some of the headlines be on this forum back in time. " Nicholl Sacked or CN sacked" " 21 games without a win!!!!" Lord Duckhunter Posted 5 September, 2010 Share Posted 5 September, 2010 The whole thing about the KK thing was it wasn't just the shock of him signing for us, it was the way Lawrie stage managed the whole thing. Nowadays it will get out beforehand, even in those days most things were leaked. My mates dad was a sports reporter at the time and he said he'd never seen anything like that in his whole career. Evidently there were gasps when he walked in.
SO16_Saint Posted 5 September, 2010 Share Posted 5 September, 2010 Along the same lines, were expecting / hoping it to be a big name, so hopefully it won't be a big surprise when it is whoever it is, but, what will the reaction of the global football world IF we get a big name?!? sadoldgit Posted 5 September, 2010 Share Posted 5 September, 2010 Chris Nicholl taking over from McMenemy. Really thought we would have a name manager to follow on. Underwhelmed.
Junction 9 Posted 5 September, 2010 Share Posted 5 September, 2010 I was only thinking about that 21 game no win run the other day and imagining the sheer hysteria there would have been on here. Communication is a great thing, but not necassarily when it comes to football fans.

I do think people would have impolded on here at that time, and can you imagine the Ruddock pen in the last minute agsainst Newcastle to win us the game that ended the run. Do you think the Saints Web Forum would have crashed?

I find it hard to believe that people attatched such importance to a football club as they do on here. Maybe they did but I just didn't now about it. I know I never will. Badger Posted 5 September, 2010 Share Posted 5 September, 2010 I can't remember the names touted after Lawrie left.I'd moved away but was told some years later by another Saints fan that Nichol had been an "open secret" for sometime in Southampton. There were ITK's pre-internet. When CN left several names were mentioned including Shilton and Channon, but before the announcement names listed in a paper included Jim Smith, Barry Lloyd (who ?) and Ray Harford. Many Saints fans wanted a proven up and coming manager from Bournemouth at the time, whose early press comments indicated he really wanted the job.I thought he was the obvious clear cut choice. Never did I expect Branfoot and what was to follow.
Dr Who? Posted 6 September, 2010 Author Share Posted 6 September, 2010 Branfoot dropping Matty would have sent this board into meltdown as well. It seems that not many people have memories of before the internet!!
