We must have a strong war chest which possibly gets larger as we go up the leagues and onto the Prem? I say this as i can not believe all the "Saints are a big club with a history" stuff and realistically think we influenced a manager coming down a league to manage us because of the prospect of a rewarded linked to success and money to improve the squad as we progress.

Adkins would have been keen just because of the size of the club IMO. He was a league above, but keeping them there was the achievement, with us it would be more because he can get crowds of 25,000+ in that league. He'd have looked at our squad too and seen he can bring us up quickly. The money and ambition for further progress has helped but I really think he'd have jumped at the chance anyway

Average attendance in the Championship is around 17,000. Scunny were getting 5,500. Next lowest were Donacster with over 10,000. After a while of having to pull rabbits out of hats every week in order to just survive on tiny budgets you'd be bound to hanker after the chance to compete on a level playing field.

I don't understand his overuse of "great history" "steeped in history" either. Surely all clubs have a history apart from MK Dons. I don't see what's so great about ours, a FA cup and a JPT.

I think you look at all the great players that we've had over the years, the great nights in the dell, the 27 years consecutive in the top flight. We do have a great history for a club at this level.

Great nights at the Dell (great as they might have been) mean absolutely diddly-squat to anyone but Southampton fans and few if any are recorded in 'Big Books of Football' produced over the years. We will get a mention alongside the Liverpool, Man United and Arsenal stories mainly because we won the FA Cup and MLT played for us but then only as a sidebar.

We all love Saints (most of the time) but in terms of the much overused 'big club' and 'great history' cliches it just isn't so.

As much as I'd like it to be.....
