Dog Posted 26 October, 2011 Share Posted 26 October, 2011 I am looking at getting my car chipped to take it up to 300bhp (285 lb-ft) a mate is going to do it for £200 inc vat, he has told me that it will make my fuel economy better. http://www.angeltuning.co.uk/ Performance will improve by 60bhp, but how will my car run cheaper on fuel? Raging Bull Posted 26 October, 2011 Share Posted 26 October, 2011 It'll be ok Dog but it ain't good for the car if you drive it hard, the valves etc work better with high octane fuel. It should be re-mapped specifically to run on better fuel too so you get the most out of it. I had a Leon Cupra R not so long ago and had a revo map put onto it, it made a massive difference to the performance although was quite aggressive. What car have you got, if it's anything VAG take it to JKM in Portsmouth, their very good.
Raging Bull Posted 26 October, 2011 Share Posted 26 October, 2011 As for fuel economy there won't be much difference either way.
buctootim Posted 26 October, 2011 Share Posted 26 October, 2011 (edited) Anyone really reckon that a tuning oufit in Oxforshire has discovered how to get more power for less fuel, presumably something which the original manufacturer could have done but thought "nah **** it lets make it slower and heavier on petrol". Remapping gets more power at the expense of higher fuel consumption - but without upgrading crank brakes etc to cope with higher power - plus the engine usually becomes really peaky and a pain to drive in normal use. Your insurance will be higher / invalidated if they find out. If you want a faster car why not buy one? Not always true, manufacturers make cars to fit a wide variation of markets which have to take into account quality of fuel available, temperature ranges etc. If the OP does his research he'll be able to find a chip which will increase fuel consumption under normal conditions but will also release a few extra horses, i think the best chips work better on diesels. I agree, but it also means that chips are more effective on vehicles that are available in markets that usually do have poor fuel and on models that have not already been tweaked by the manufacturer. So chips for landrover defenders are going to be much more effective thanthose for Lancer evos etc. That said my brother in law did have his Leon Cupra chipped and he did seem to think that it made a decent amount of difference. Dog Posted 27 October, 2011 Author Share Posted 27 October, 2011 Just to let you know, I had it done yesterday and driving at normal cruising conditions I am getting around 6mpg better fuel economy. When I put my foot down hard, the difference is massive, in fact it's too quick for the brakes. Best £200 I've ever spent.
Dog Posted 27 October, 2011 Author Share Posted 27 October, 2011 Do they put your car on the rolling road so you can see the print out of the difference? They can do if you require it, but I couldn't be bothered.

Nigel at Angel did my car a few years ago. An extra 50bhp and shed loads more torque for £250 (how the hell did you get it for £200?). My MPG has consistently been about about 6 up. Downside is I have had to beef up my brakes and replace the clutch and dual mass flywheel which died as a result of the extra torque. That all said it was money well spent as the performance still puts a smile on my face every time I push my right foot down.

Nigel did mine, they are doing a deal, 2 cars for £200 each, so I got mine done and the 18 year old office girl. She said she'll pay me back a bit at a time. dronskisaint Posted 30 October, 2011 Share Posted 30 October, 2011 I had my 2001 A6 turbodiesel 2.5 done when I had that about 7 years ago and it made a huge difference in the smoothness of acceleration - particularly noticeable with the automatic gearbox and surprisingly it upped the mpg by about 4mpg on a journey and 1-2 round town. My insurance went up by £80 but it was worth all the extra that I paid...NB the brakes cope fine if you don't drive like a tw*t (which sometimes I don't :-))
