Batman Posted 29 July, 2013 Share Posted 29 July, 2013 In some town centres, in order to try an boost business... Agree totally. Some of the pedestrianised areas in some towns are a bit OTT Nice idea

Minty Posted 29 July, 2013 Share Posted 29 July, 2013 Double yellows are rarely anything to do with pedestrianised areas, usually they're to stop cars from parking in areas where it would cause an obstruction to other traffic if they did so, and to keep a route clear. Got a link to the actual story?
Hatch Posted 29 July, 2013 Share Posted 29 July, 2013 bad parking annoys the hell out of me. If people can park on double yellows and completely screw up town centres , I think my head will explode.

Agreed, hence wondering where the story came from... a bit of context is needed.
Minty Posted 29 July, 2013 Share Posted 29 July, 2013 Got it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-23488437 Motorists could be allowed to park free of charge on double yellow lines for up to fifteen minutes under plans being considered to help boost High Streets. Drivers in England could be given a "grace period" to pick up goods from shops or leave their cars in bays for longer without being fined... scotty Posted 29 July, 2013 Share Posted 29 July, 2013 Already been ruled out, from the sound of it. And tbh, I don't really see how it would help the high street; how much browsing can you do in 15 minutes? That said, it ought to be easier and cheaper to park in town. You used to have to queue to get in to the NCP, (which is empty nowadays, probably because their charges are eyewatering.) The East St carpark is still ok and pretty reasonable, but more awkward to get to from the west.
Chez Posted 29 July, 2013 Share Posted 29 July, 2013 Allowing parking on double yellows is one of the most stupid ideas I have ever heard. The yellows are their for safety reasons and to ensure flow of traffic. People who park on double yellows (that is quite obviously requireed for one of those two reasons I just mentioned) are utter ****s. If the yellows are not actually needed for safety and/or traffic flow reasons and have just been put in to force people into paid for car parks or meters then simply remove them. Councils will say they are there for the benefit of the local community, but don't believe that for a minute. There isn't hardly a road in Soton city cdntre that hasn't got a meter or a set if doubles. It's a money making excercise. To help the highstreet, councils need to provide free or low cost parking. Why the hell would I pay £5 to park my car for a few of hours to simply browse around the shops?
TopGun Posted 29 July, 2013 Share Posted 29 July, 2013 Blue badge drivers parking in moronic places on double yellows is bad enough. Witless idea.
JN9 Posted 30 July, 2013 Share Posted 30 July, 2013 When I went to Newquay last new year we spent ages trying to find a parking space before the hostel owner told us that you can park on double yellows outside of the season... Seemed to work there, so why not other places?
The Cat Posted 30 July, 2013 Share Posted 30 July, 2013 The East St carpark is still ok and pretty reasonable, but more awkward to get to from the west. Not anymore, it's been closed down. Not just cheaper parking that would help high streets, cheaper public transport would too. I normally cycle to town from Hamble but as it was raining this morning I drove to Woolston and parked there. Thought I'd get the bus over the Itchen Bridge, it won't be much. I was wrong. £2.90 return for less than 10 minutes each way on the bus.
The Cat Posted 30 July, 2013 Share Posted 30 July, 2013 I really enjoy seeing ignorant, lazy idiots getting parking tickets for parking on double yellows so I wholeheartedly welcome any confusion this plan causes.
Hatch Posted 30 July, 2013 Share Posted 30 July, 2013 I actually want to be a traffic warden one day. I would set all sorts of records for ticket awarding.
