The FA Cup is different altogether, though, because it's partly about luck, you've got to remember that. We experienced it last year in the quarter-finals against *Portsmouth, where we didn't carry any luck [and lost 1–0]. You always want a home draw but Southampton have got that and it's an advantage to them. It's a good stadium at St Mary's, a nice pitch, and they are a young team. Their coach [Jan Poortvliet] has done a great job considering he doesn't have any money." http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/jan/02/sir-alex-ferguson-manchester-united-football-southampton-fa-cup

um pahars Posted 3 January, 2009 Share Posted 3 January, 2009 That will probably be the preface to the Interims due out later this month. Iwelumo gets the Annual Report and Fergie gets the Interims. I was giggling when Iwelumo, amongst others, was trotted out by Lowe as a testament to what a successful season we've been having. I prefer to stick with the league table as my reference point. I can only presume these soundbites get treated like time penalties at the end of each rally stage in that we will get extra points added on come May for all the nice things said about us by managers and players departing with three points under their coats. As Lowe himself used to say, this is a results driven business.
NickG Posted 3 January, 2009 Author Share Posted 3 January, 2009 what was the Iwelumo one I missed that? Was it quoting post match comment on how well we played?

dubai_phil Posted 3 January, 2009 Share Posted 3 January, 2009 Ouch. The Yahoo headline to that interview hurts Ferguson challenges misfiring United to run riot at Southampton http://uk.news.yahoo.com/18/20090103/tuk-ferguson-challenges-misfiring-united-2c0ffe7.html Mind you a Man U manager said that sort of thing once before...... But we had experienced players then
Runaway Posted 3 January, 2009 Share Posted 3 January, 2009 If Fergie thinks Poortvliet has done a good job, I'd hate to see Jan do a bad one. We're virtually bottom of the league and have only 1 home win all season!

WealdSaint Posted 3 January, 2009 Share Posted 3 January, 2009 I think saying he has done a great job is a little bit of a mind game..........if he'd said Jan had done a crap job then maybe it might inject a little more spirit into our squad. Also, Fergie is helpfully writing Jan's post match interview for him
OLYMPIC Posted 3 January, 2009 Share Posted 3 January, 2009 Maybe Fergie asked what league we are in now and was told championship and he misheard and thought it was champions league so better say something nice about the manager.

As Lowe himself used to say, this is a results driven business. You're not wrong either! I wish some managers were going away from SMS, tails between their legs, muttering that the boys outfought them, the ref was against them and it was 'another 3 points lost'. SaintRobbie Posted 3 January, 2009 Share Posted 3 January, 2009 But he's buttering us up.........can't you see that ? Of course he is. Funny isnt it... one of the only other things he can mention is we have a nice pitch... still I guess that in itself plays to Utd's favour. Mole Posted 3 January, 2009 Share Posted 3 January, 2009 If Fergie saw us a threat he'd have throw a cannon ball at us in the article like him and Wenger did so much. It was just a standard show of respect (obviously ******** as Jan has not done a good job) before his team thumps us with ease.
