bigdavewatson Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 into a 15,000 stadium!! I've heard this from a couple of sources. Not overly reliable ones to be honest and I would certainly not claim this as fact, but alledgedly this is being discussed as a plan B. As a result of our situation, I do think it's fair to say that the board must be contemplating a number of options for administration and or relegation. The stadium (land) is probably one of the few assets we have although I cant see who would buy it. Having said that we have a mortgage on it, what would happen if we just "gave the keys back" and got rid of the debt? Serious, non abusive replies only, please ;-) Sorry if this has ben posted elsewhere.
landford.saint Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 Apart from the fact it would cost more to redevelope Staplewood than we owe on St.Mary's. We dont own most if not all of Staplewood. Access is diabolical ete. etc. Total and utter pigswill..
SaintRobbie Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 Why not? We'll be in League 2 in 1 1/2 years time. Makes sense if you're intent on turning SFC into a plc that is allowed to survive as it provides young players for CCC teams. An option I suggest Lowe would genuinely contemplate if necessary. Personally... I think its boooools though
buctootim Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 Brighton's new 22,500 capacity stadium is now estimated to cost £60m! so I cant see moving from SMS and starting again at Staplewood would release anywhere near enough cash. IMO the biggest priority should be to try to get the enormous business rates bill reduced, or if it came to it, trying to adapt an existing ground into football like Brighton did. The sports centre or the Rosebowl might work.

benjii Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 Can we knock it down, drag The Dell flats over there and rebuild The Dell instead please?
rocknrollman no2 Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 I would have thought that Jacksons farm will be the first big thing sold? As for building a stadium at Staplewood,i doubt that would get planning permission.
Colinjb Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 So, we go down, are up against it, and downscale. While we 'survive within our means' we will only fall. That this has even been suggested is a sign of how f*cked we are.
Badger Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 Likelihood of planning permission for Staplewood = nil.

Plus none of that would be acceptable within the specified regional planning guidances in any case so it's a non starter theoretically, practically and financially. Mole Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 I hate out of town stadiums and i'd hate to ground share with portsmouth even more, but from a business point of view a shared stadium on the M27 would be advantageous for both clubs. alehouseboys Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 ...I've heard this from a couple of sources...QUOTE] ...the first one on April 1st? As inadequate access to 'Dibden Bay' was a major factor in it being thrown out can you imagine how 15,000 people descending on this leafy edge-of-the-New Forest site would be greeted? And would a new stadium, albeit 15,000, cost more than what SMS is worth to a developer in today's economic climate? Clearing the site would cost a fortune, unless they sold it to the skates! Oh, and it aint in Southampton!
Arizona Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 So er what, someone's going to buy SMS for about £30m, then raise it to the ground so we can't play there and turn it into office space? How about no.

You can wrap it up, just like the old Southampton Speedway team at Bannister Court, and forget the whole thing.
