So what were they before 927AD ? Where did all the non Anglo-Saxons go in that year ? As with my earlier post, were my wife's parents Scottish, Welsh, or English ? If they were Welsh and Scottish, what is my wife's ethnicity ? So anybody descended from the Norman invaders isn't English ? Are Kernewek speakers not English ? And he accuses "leftists" of avoiding giving answers. Edited 15 hours ago by badgerx16

Holmes_and_Watson Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago 6 hours ago, Osvaldorama said: you’re doing it again Go and look in a dictionary. English and Ethnicity are very very clearly defined words. If someone were to say that they are English, I've not seen a post here that is saying that it doesn't exist. This seems to be something you're projecting. There has been discussion on what "English" means to different people. The definition you agree with is :- "The English are an ethnic group and nation native to England, defined historically by a shared ancestry originating from Anglo-Saxon and Celtic roots, as well as a common language, culture, and history." And this is why I asked. "The English are an ethnic group and nation native to England." - If native means place of birth, that's anyone born here. "...defined historically by a shared ancestry originating from Anglo-Saxon and Celtic roots." - People born/ citizens of here can and do share in the history/ culture of the nation, adding to it as lots of people have done since it started being a nation. If, in your view, they are to be added together, then it really falls apart. The Celtic Britons included what would be Welsh and Cornish speakers for a start. So there goes the common language, and that shared ancestry goes across different countries. The Anglo-Saxons might have got a unified England going. There's a massive influx of cultures across the period from when the Angles and the Saxons arrived. But, to give you your definition, you are English if you can trace your line back to Alfred or even AEthelstan. Except there were the successful invasions by the Danes and the Normans. Events that very much shaped England. But that's not included in your definition. So, anyone post-Norman conquest or possibly any number of Scandinavian raids and settlers don't count as English. There's not even a union flag to wave, under your definition, as that didn't make an appearance until the 17th century. Perhaps they can tie other people's comments about leftists to lamp posts instead. 3

Presumably we'd all have to get behind the flag of Essex which is believed to be the oldest flag representing the Kingdom of Essex?

Which brings us back to what makes a person "English" ? 1) They live in England and identify as English. 2) They were born in England and identify as English. 3) They were born of one English parent. 4) They were born of two English parents. 5) They can trace back an unbroken pure bred line of "English" ancestors to 927AD. 6) Some other definition. But you will refuse to answer because either this is a childish question, or more likely, you are full of shit. 4

Holmes_and_Watson Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago 1 hour ago, Osvaldorama said: So Erling Haaland is English and should have been made to play for England? Haaland was indeed eligible to play for England, having been born there. He spent some of his early childhood in England too, I believe. The only person with a fixation in making people be a certain thing, even though you can't give a coherent definition, is yourself. Haaland had the option of picking Norway based on the rest of his upbringing. It was your own definition that said the English are native to England. This example shows things are a bit more fluid in the real world. Also by your definition, Haaland couldn't really be English unless he could trace family back to before the Norman conquest. No one is English, unless they can do that. You should be updating the FA on that. 1
