Woud we be looking to buy players if about to go into administration?

My first though was signing 3 players so far this window, and none departing suggests administration is not very close. As well as looking at this dutch forward who I wouldn't think would be cheap.

Although think administration means a bar on new signings -so is it a case of getting them in when you can?

Wotte's comments re signings from OS;

Saints boss Mark Wotte confirmed that he is still on the look-out for players before the end of the transfer window but will not panic buy…

The new Head Coach already has the advantage of knowing his squad's strengths and weaknesses, but has spoken of a need to be both 'careful' and 'creative' in any transfer dealings.

With finances tight Wotte insisted that he will not bolster his squad unnecessarily, nor has he ruled out the possibility of making loan signings after the close of the transfer window.

"I don't want anyone who isn't better than the players we have," Wotte said. "It's no use bringing someone in just because the window is open. We can always bring someone in on loan afterwards.

"If I bring in a player from abroad it has to be someone who has proven his quality and had played at a certain level. Jan-Paul Saeijs was not a risky signing because we know him very well.

"It's always a risk to bring in someone so late in the season, so if we do that it has to be someone who has specific qualities, but we are looking for such a player."

Recent speculation had linked Southampton with a move for Dutch striker Romano Denneboom from former England boss Steve McLaren's current side FC Twente. However, Wotte has now confirmed that the player's situation has now changed.

"We spoke with Romano Denneboom from FC Twente and we were told at one time that he could leave the club," Wotte explained. "Steve McLaren then decided he had to stay and this week he scored twice for Twente in a Cup game, so there was no point in asking again if he is available.

"This was a player that I knew as well myself. I worked with him with the Under-21 national team in Holland and at a club in the Dutch Premier League. A player like that could help us, but we are shopping with pennies not millions and it's not easy to bring in quality.

"We will try to keep our eyes and ears open and be creative though, but they have to be better than what we already have."

Could it be that at the point in time we overtly stop acquiring assets (because there's a dawning inevitability we're about to go into administration) do we cease to be a 'going concern' at that point in time and, as such, by continuing in a 'business as usual' fashion enables us to have more control over the date we choose to formally go into voluntary administration?

In other words, it's a bit of a catch-22....?

(not very articulate but perhaps you get my drift?)

It could be a few players might be going so they might have some funds to replace them with lesser players. I think Davis going to Sunderland could be gathering some legs. Time will tell won't it.

If so, seems strange that he's the new club captain. I assume he agreed to it?

No, not strange on planet SFC.

e.g.

An SFC employee w/c 19th January 2009.....

Tuesday: "We've had a +ve meeting, I'm staying and I will now redouble my efforts"

Friday: "Bugger that, I'm out of here"

I think the club would have a fair idea if he was going (subject to sudden last minute big bid), would know that him going would hit team hard and be unpopular -so don't think even they would make him club capt as well!

I know few days left but I posted that thought it may not be as bad as some were predicting, but so far none sold and decent CB in! Fingers crossed as we hardly strength in depth!

Where has it gathered legs?

Kelvin going to a cushy number at a southern club going places - QPR - I can see, but why go to Sunderland to be a reserve keeper at a club where he was lampooned and despised during the worst period of his entire career? And if he had a sniff of that move (and he would by now) he wouldn't have agreed to be club captain. He's not a complete idiot.

And have to live around bloody Sunderland? And be relegated with Sunderland, again?

Can't see it. People can say "money" but Kaka could have gone to Man City for "money". He didn't go because the move would be pointless.

Kelvin going to Sunderland would be pointless. Really can't see it.

Its in the papers now so someone must have got wind of it.

As others have mentioned it really is a case of what the club want to do with Davis. He is possibly one of the big earners at the club. His contract runs out in 5 months. If we survive then chances are he will have to take a pay cut to stay and if we don't he will obviously be released. So i think the thing is would he do that? If he knows he won't be offered a new contract at this club then why wait until the summer if he can leave now and make the club some money? We have three other keepers in Bart,Poke and now Forecast.

Right now Davis is in the form of his life, keepers who are like that are very hard to come by, especially cheap. So i don't think it is too far fetched at all.

Have just spoken to a conspiracy theorist friend who suggests that making Davis club captain in the last week of the transfer window could be an attempt to squeeze a few more pennies out of any bid that comes in for him.

A bargaining tool if you like.

New club: "We would like to offer you £800,000 for K.Davis"

SFC: "Hell, we've just made him club captain. There would be uproar if we sold our club captain for that"

New club: "Ok, fair point. How about £1m instead?"

SFC: "Ok, deal"

OS: "SFC sell Davis due to receiving an offer we couldn't refuse"

I don't know. The price I pay for having a conspiracy theorist as a friend.

Can you imagine the uproar if we'd have made Perry or Paul Wotton the club captain - that would have decided in everyone's minds that Davis going was a "done deal".

This forum is like the Salem witch trials sometimes.:D

Kelvin going it completely possible, I'm not saying it won't happen. I'd be surprised if its Sunderland purely from Kelvin's previous experience, that's all. What would be the point?

There is still plenty of time for Lowe to offload some "Star" players, and I am sure he will, now that he has got Three replacements already

I'm sure this "threat" to Wilde is a smokescreen, to try to defuse the volatile reaction in seeing our few remaining players of note, being sold to bolster the Lowe's PLC

there is still plent of time -put on one of these threads that heard on radio 80% of transfer nationally take place in last 24 hours.

Having said that, 3 in, talks for at least one other -doesn't sound like administration this week to me.

At very least I would have thought the financial situation was explained to some degree to Saeijs before he moved to another country?

No, we are going into admin; people like Stanley and Alpwhine want it to happen and say it will happen so it must be true as they are always right.

Add Mr Lowe to that list (as per Charles Sale column on 21st Jan, reputed to be Lowe's media mouthpiece by some.)

Can you explain why we could not afford to keep the decent manager we had last summer ?

No I can't. My guess is that we could have afforded to keep him i.e. would not have gone bust paying him. But Lowe wanted to bring in his new team, he thought they would be both cheaper and at least as good. Whether he saved money who knows but obviously Jan didn't work.

This thread was a question in response to the rumours of imminent administration -next few days???
