Jeff Stelling feels our pain

Surprised no-one has started a thread about this, maybe it was just me that heard it.

Jeff Stelling was on Five Live earlier talking about his new book, Soccer Saturday and Football in general and went out of his way to talk about Southampton as being one of the sad stories of the season.

I'm pretty sure he described Saints as "pretty close to my heart".

Mentioned that he was talking to Bobby Charlton about us (!) - how could a club so well run for so long have fallen so far, he said something about Bobby saying how Saints always pushed/battled well against the top clubs in the land and now look at them.

And then Stelling said - all the fans are saying where has the money for Theo gone, where has the money for Beattie gone, where has the money for Kenwynne gone, where has the money for Wayne Bridge gone.

It was pretty impassioned and I was quite surprised. And he didn't even mention Matty, which is where I thought he was coming from - it seems very much "his own" view if you like.

Anyway, sounded nice to hear support from a relatively high profile figure, and genuinely unprompted too.

If anyone wants to here it it was on Colin Murray standing in for Simon Mayo on Five Live today between 2:15 and 2:45, sorry can't quite remember precise time.

He lives in Arlesford, I've met him at M3 Winchester services before

He told me his kids are Saints supporters and were even mascots last season sometime

Ahh, that'll be it then. Didn't know that key piece of info.

Jeff Stelling was a guest on Christian O’Connell’s breakfast show on Absolute Radio about 5 weeks ago. Christian is a big saints fan. He spoke to Jeff Stelling about ‘Countdown’ and ‘Sky Sports News’ and tried to get him to agree that Matt le Tissier was the best guest on the Sky panel but Stelling diplomatically said they were all excellent in different ways – MLT mainly for his sardonic humour.

Jeff Stelling said he was saddened to see saints struggling at the foot of the Championship as he considered the club his second team and always takes a special interest in saints fortunes.

One of O’Connell’s co-presenters set a few conundrums (because of the countdown connection) to test both Jeff and Christian. The answers were all names of football clubs, I don’t remember the first two but neither guessed the team in the 30 seconds given. Then the final conundrum was ‘Tampon Shout’ and I thought it was far too obvious but neither managed to guess it correctly, O’Connell guessed ‘Portsmouth’ at the last second.

When they were told it was actually ‘Southampton,’ O’Connell was embarrased but said he only failed to guess it correctly as he does not associate his club with women’s sanitary products.

Not sure what the Portsmouth fans made of his comments there!

o'connell's a ****, he said live on his breakfast radio show at time when saints were relegated, asking listeners to phone up with suggestions on other premiership clubs he could support in place of saints

even if he was having a laugh he's still a ****
