if Shaw gets too tight Bale goes outside him easily and then smashes a cross that they score from. Shaw doesn't do a lot wrong. He gets hius distances about right, but Bales acceleration and power is just blistering and he can't close the gap. Bale comes a lon way inside before shooting. A central player has to be filling that space.

Fonte and Jos have come in for a lot of stick but Defoe didn't have a sniff. Why Yoshida gets in ahead if Fonte I wilk never know. Shaw looked a little rusty and his pace was nullified by Walker, but we just look far more comfortable with him in the side. I don't blame him for the goal. He just couldn't get close enough to Bale, who had done **** all, and having gone all the way across there must have been someone to step in. Perhaps Jos coukd have stepped up but Bale hit it so early.
