Not quite the answer you are looking for, but while it seems much more normal now, Liverpool did an amazing job of resisting Arsenal for Suarez a year ago. For quite some time it just looked inevitable -they could offer CL footie which he craved, Liverpool had missed out again, Arsenal had the £££ to pay and were keen to assemble a better squad. Liverpool were unbelievably robust in their resistance and hey ho, he stayed. Ok they are a huge club with big resources, so its not the same as us, but they still did an amazing job of hanging onto one of the best strikers in the world
