That's a pretty good description, IMO and I have often thought that. And just like Owen, who has definitely lost an edge, due to injury, Steve lost his due to his back injury. He was still an effective striker, although Chris Nicholl was aiming for a different format which didn't really have room for Moran.

These Build-Up threads are starting to appear for the next match succeeding the one yet to be played..! Any chance you might quell the enthusiasm a bit..? No, thought not. I suppose I'd better make it a Sticky and shut up.

Well the Mt Eyjafjallajöekull [love that name]eruption hadn't personally piddled me off until now, but next week's Motegi MotoGP, in Japan, has been called off until October 4th, because nobody can get there. All the bikes, machinery and kit is there already, after being flown on a week ago from the last MotoGP in Qatar. Bugger it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/motorbikes/8628316.stm

On the strength of the OP's enthusiasm, I watched the entire race on the iPlayer. Had to skip the ONE HOUR LONG build up. What the hell do we need that for..? Anyway, it has just finished, as it happens. If that was supposed to be exciting then Bahrain must have been a wrist slitting exercise. Yeah, it was reasonably good, thanked immensely by the rain, but something still isn't right. Maybe the races are just too long, but I can't be bothered to watch them going round and round. Maybe I just don't care anymore. I think I'll stick to the highlights in future, if I watch at all. Nice to see a McLaren One-Two. One thing of note though, JB has been a really good driver all these years and never had the car under him to prove it - until last year and this one.

Steve Moran maybe remembered by young Saints fans for that one goal, but he scored a hatful in his time with Saints, and was a really great goalscorer, and I'm not saying that with Saints bias. He was a poacher of real class. Injury did for Steve at Saints, and he eventually left for Leicester City, then Reading, Exeter, etc... We'll not forget that goal, or plenty of others. Against the then mighty Liverpool, with Alan Hansen as the last defender, who Steve beats before scoring. Remind him of that one. Keegan as teammate and assist. Part of a great Saints team.

Been busy today, so haven't been able to tune in, except for the last few seconds, almost literally. I had resolved that this season was over, and that I had enjoyed practically every minute of it. I know there have been better quality, but I can't remember so enjoyable a season, almost ever. This team is different in so many aspects to other Saints sides [let's leave aside the third tier element] of the past. There is a fight in them that I haven't seen in a Saints side for over 25 years. The 2003 WGS had guts and determination, but lacked the confidence [and backing] to go further. This one is, without doubt, stacked to the gunwhales with the belief that a game is not over until the final whistle. Alan Pardew has changed my opinion of him. I knew he was a pretty good manager, and I know he has almost certainly the best squad in League One to play with. But it has only been since the January transfer window, and even then, with so many cup games, he didn't have settled side. But since February, despite a couple of hiccups, this Saints side have been terrific. I don't have to go to matches every week [chance would be a fine thing] to know that. I'm not a fool, I can work things out from data and stats. Even when they've played badly they've nearly always managed to get a result. That's a true sign of winners. And this has been instilled by Pardew. A spirit in a Saints team that I can't remember ever seeing. Perhaps Lawrie's teams had the same never-say-die, I just can't remember. And one last thing about AP - I love his bravery. He's not afraid to throw in the kitchen sink..! We need a goal and we're down to 10 men..? OK, remove practically the rest of the midfield and we'll have 4 strikers out there. What have we got to lose..? You've got to admire that do-or-die attitude. So, if we make the playoffs this season, it's been fantastic. If we don't it has only been slightly less so. 'Course, we have to win them too.

Pretty much as I see it, too. Although I've not followed them, as you have, I have never wished ill on them. In fact, I've always wanted to see a stronger southern regional presence in football, with several teams in the south with Premiership status, if only to shut up the Northern and London bias. Southampton FC would be at the top of this particular pile, of course.

To my mind, the less you react, the smaller they are.

Nick Drake - A Skin Too Few. It's on BBC4 at present, but obviously it will be on iPlayer later. Very sad story, but the kind of music that was his wasn't going to be made by a happy man. I do love Nick Drake's music. I'm just not sure it's entirely healthy to. EDIT: Mustn't forget - do try watching the series about 3 scientists who are/were outstanding. It's called Beautiful Minds. The one just gone is about James Lovelock, of the Gaia Hyposthesis. I remember throughout my Environmental Science degree that JL's theory was there, but it wasn't referred to. I thought it had great merit, but it was frowned upon. Wish I'd listened to my instincts and argued the case. Now he's mainstream.

Not particularly. Welcome to the forum.

Anybody mentioned Downeys, in Shirley, yet..? I think they just about qualify. They used a pneumatic system too, I think.

Fair enough. If you've read through the thread, you'll know that it was only a thought I had, that I wanted to share. I held no great store by it. I didn't realise my merest thoughts were held in such esteem. But then I did say it was only a thought. Do I have to write out the caveat every time I post a message with a questionable standpoint..?
-
On BBC4 now, I'm listening to various artists playing the songs of Nick Drake. It started at 9pm and ends at 10.30pm. Wish I'd heard it from the start, as it is really good. Drake's songs have such a haunted character to them.

You're not getting it, Alpine. They may well have a great chance of auto-promotion, but having lost this match they still have a great chance of promotion. The motivation wasn't that strong to bust a gut, IMO. Anyway, back to reality. Huddersfield now need to either; 1] lose 2 of their remaining 3 matches, or 2] draw all 3 of them, or 3] win, draw and lose 1 each. It's not impossible, just improbable. Colchester need to beat them for us. That would be OK. Millwall can **** off.
-
Haven't been following the match this evening, as I've been busy, but what I mentioned earlier might just have come to pass. Why should Millwall bust a gut..? They'll be in the playoffs and be the strogest team there. Plus they're extremely unlikely to have Saints to contend with now. They win out, win, lose or draw, this match.
-
It was just a thought.
-
Had a thought earlier which I'm dubious about sharing, but I'll see if people think it has weight, which is... Millwall may NOT go 100% for a win tonight, as they would be making the chances of Saints being in the playoffs greater if they did, and won. If they then didn't manage to make automatic promotion [whether they won tonight or not], they would consider Huddersfield to be easier opposition than Saints. As you can see, the frantic brain has being doing some overtime today.
-
I think we can consider this to be it.

Remarkable video. It looks like both wheels sets of brake pads have suddenly locked up under maximum downforce at the end of the straight in such a way that grip between the tyres and track was not broken. Because of that, the front wheels want to turn the car over; i.e. back end over front. That won't happen because the whole car is glued to the tarmac, the turning force has shattered the suspension and steering mounts. Notice that not only do the wheels leave the car, but essentially so does the braking system. Of course, there's no front axle, so nothing else to hold the wheels on with. Off they go..! Anyway, that's my theory. Did anyone else see the energy stored in the wheels being released. They went bouncing off at a heck of a rate. Quite exciting. More please..!
-
You're right. I don't know why I didn't see that. I'll edit the post, cheers.

Huddersfield V Millwall. Let's not beat about the bush here, this is as Saints related as St Marys Stadium, albeit for one night only. Here's a stat of note: I pointed this out the other evening but I'll say it again; assuming Saints do win all their remaining matches - if Huddersfield lose against Millwall, they MUST WIN ALL their remaining games to go into the playoffs, and one of those is against other rivals Colchester United. Of course, if Saints don't win their remaining matches, I think we can kiss the remotest playoff chance goodbye, and consider we've had a season of great fun, and building, toward Season 2010/11. Colchester's fortunes are a matter for Saturday. Anyway, here's one Lions supporter [and counting] for Friday night only.

Players we've detested over the past 5 years

Indeed. Can't be bothered to look back to that era, and don't even want to.
