  1. Gove is simply deluded and out of touch with the reality facing many in this country. Given the current climate of austerity there is no way the Government will be funding such a project and given the hardship faced by many it is almost obscene to be suggesting this "gift". Even if the Government opted for some Keynesian deficit spending, then I think this would still be way down on the list. I'm sure there are many more worthy and beneficial projects to UK PLC than this mad scheme Like many of his hair brained schemes he is just out of touch with the reality facing many in this country.
  2. Did you mean this article??????? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-14679657 Interesting reading and certainly makes you think about how we generalise races and ethnic groups
  3. K Definitely reports from a number of passengers that the user drill was planned for this afternoon. As you say I thought it was standard to do almost as soon as the gangplank was up. On the QE recently we had our muster drill as we were sailing down Southampton water.
  4. Cracking result!!!!! Really impressed considering we've not done too well against some of the weaker teams. Bit of a break to Leicester as well. Good day all round
  5. Hasn't she been over at Marchwood MP for a few days????
  6. But surely if the SNP lose the referendum then we'll still be stuck with the "leech" that is Scotland. And as for your tongue in cheek cleaving off of the North, then I'm surprised you don't want to dump the few urban areas in the South that are also areas of relative deprivation (e.g Plymouth, Portsmouth & Southampton). Problem is you'd have to follow Hamble, Follands or Sarisbury Sparks
  7. But surely if you want to cut them adrift then you must be at odds with Cameron and his approach as IMHO it will only marginalise the SNP and put independence back a few decades.
  8. GM, are you for or against Scottish independence??? I totally agree with Cameron's stance and as a supporter of the Union have to say I think his forcing of the issue (inc an in or out vote and no "devolution max") will mean that the SNP will not succeed. Seems as though you're happy for them to go it alone, but think Cameron's approach makes that less likely.
  9. Luker and I'm sure Oldknow both undertook surveys whilst we were at SMS and the results were that we had a "relatively" older season ticket fanbase than other clubs. Obviously things may change but that was a true 3/4 years back. Although the Dells capacity definitely restricted "newcomers" I think they also accepted that the cost of tickets was also putting many off. Of course that therefore might have changed with the offers we have had recently. And as aintforever says above, many of our fanbase still get their info from the Echo, hence why I'm always pushing for a mutually beneficial relationship between them and the Club.
  10. Wouldn't have thought he would be tweeting that as sure he doesn't partake in Twitter (hence his "too many tweets make you a tawt line")
  11. Some would probably add that it should be allowed when sexual violence/rape has been used during the murder as well. However, I remember that Tom and Tackle murder where the bloke admitted it and spent 27 odd years in nick only to be released when he later appealed. I just can't agree with the death penalty on two points. Firstly, we convict to a standard of "beyond reasonable doubt" not 100% definite (and when people say but there are some that are definitely definite, then the problem is where on that sliding scale does the definite fall away) and of course there's no way back from the death penalty!!! Secondly I really just don't believe in the State taking an individual's life (eye for eye leaving you blind, those who seek vengeance should dig two graves etc etc etc). But I agree with Duckhunter in that the life sentence should mean just that and that the tariff appears to be too lenient nowadays.
  12. Just got a wedding invitation thought the post for the Sunday and confused about what day this match is on. OS says Saturday lunchtime, but aren't these games on a Sunday??!! I'm sure this has been discussed before but couldn't find thread and obviously wasn't affected bait then so didn't read and take in. Cheers
  13. Totally agree Trousers, but my only caveat would be that the timing, given it is embroiled in the middle of one of the most sensitive and important race issues of a generation, meant such a crass comment at this time would have legs. That said, as you say with the Clarkson incident(s), people seem to seek out a reason to be offended and a cause to rally around, whilst others start rubbing their hands with glee as they start use it in a manner to justify their own viewpoint (i.e. the BNP are more than happy to run with this in a perverse manner to justify their own rhetoric). A crass statement, but to declare someone racist, you indeed have to look further thanone crass and clumsy comment and on this regard Abbott has a positive legacy of fighting racism of all counts.
  14. Indeed she is not thick, certainly not in a traditional academic sense anyway. Like BoJo she is academically bright, but prone to gaffes and foot in mouth moments.
  15. I think it was a totally crass statement, regardless of whatever medium it came out on. Generalisations of this kind are just so wrong. Given the timing and her own background she really should have known better. Unsure how it can be seen to have been taken out of context which leads me on to her faux apology. As others have said I despise the apology of "sorry if you've taken it the wrong way". It doesn't mean anything and attempts to pass the blame on to others.
  16. You may genuinely feel that way, but as far as I can tell from all the reporting that is certainly not the case. The death of this young man is central to everything I have seen, heard or read and that is despite the serious repercussions and changes his murder had on our society. Everything else, despite their seriousness is secondary. Now with that I'm out, as being honest I'm not overly comfortable with the tone, direction and gist of some of the posts on this thread. I'm finding it somewhat unedifying.
  17. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here (in that I hope it's ignorance on your part and not trying to be cantankerous just for the sake of it, which would be extremely insensitive and disappointing) but I do think you have seriously misjudged all that this case is about. There's a good piece by Michael Mansbridge on the Guardian website, you'd do well to read it (and others): http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/jan/03/stephen-lawrence-verdict-society-murderers There's a line in it about why the MacPherson Inquiry felt it was necessary to understand the motivation of the murder and the part racism played in it: "must surely make us all determined that by education, family and community influence, proper policing and all available means society does all it can to ensure that the minds of present and future generations are not allowed to become violent and maliciously prejudiced". In the grand scheme of things the motivation of the racists is central to events and it is crucial to understand how this manifested itself most importantly to try and ensure such henious crimes are not repeated.
  18. Many congratulations fella!!!!!
  19. Well firstly I'm not sure anyone is giving each other cyber high 5s because were convicted of a racist murder. Tempered relief/joy (if that's the right emotion) that justice has finally been seen to be done maybe, but not the excessive jubilation in the way youve described (even if there is still the issue of three others still walking the streets). And I'm not sure anyone has suggested one murder is worse than another, so methinks you might be titling at windmills on both counts. It was a landmark case for many reasons (changing of double jeopardy rule, highlighting institutional racism in the establishment, the myriad of recommendations in the inquiry report etc etc etc), but struggling to understand if you're really that ignorant or instead being somewhat disingenuous with your replies (and honestly not sure what is worse with regards this case).
  20. A human being was killed because he was black. That is the relevance in this instance.
  21. Of course it matters why it happened!!! Not least so an attempt might be made to eradicate the environment, motivation and rationale for other attacks.
  22. And be cup-tied!!!!!
  23. I think you're right. It was an obvious response and a symptom of his current frustration with the people, the Club and the area.
  24. I'm just waiting for the spanner to link Lambert's dismissal to the binge drinking session on Boxing Day.
