  8. I'm a huge fan of Robert Goddard (born in Fareham, incidentally) and I've just finished his latest but one novel, Blood Count. Its underlying theme is the Bosnian war. Most of his novels are based on historical events including the first world war. They're all really gripping thrillers and unputdownable. http://www.robertgoddardbooks.co.uk/ http://www.robertgoddardbooks.co.uk/books/bloodcount.html
  9. Oh god - I tried these and they made me hallucinate! I haven't stopped but I've cut down drastically by never smoking in the house and not smoking at all on the days I look after my grandchildren. Mind you, when I get back after looking after them I practically chain smoke for about 3 hours!

  11. There's always a first time to describe the boundaries and that's when discussions and explanations are to be had and then reinforced should breaches occur in the future. It's my experience, having raised three children all of whom are polite, non-violent and caring, that hitting is the easy way out. Raising children isn't easy and taking the easy way out doesn't solve any problems long term. How many children do you have Turkish?
  12. And far, far better than a wallop.
  13. But it is, in a way. It's saying 'That's not a very nice/safe/reasonable thing to do and these are the reasons why and the consequences' Not that tough a debate to be had, even with a toddler.
  14. Depends on how you class 'minority' I suppose. Not a day goes by when we don't read about corrupt police and politicians, paedophile teachers, priests and scoutmasters. They are, of course, unrepresentative of their professions, but to a somewhat naive young person (and to some extent, us too) they are all tarred with the same brush.
  15. But don't you think that respect is to be earned rather than expected? For example, if a young person is waiting to be served in a shop and an elderly person pushes in front of him or her, why should that elderly person be respected? They're just plain rude (and probably the first to moan about 'feral youth'.
  16. This. I was never hit as a child, although I was always scared my father might wallop me one day. The fear was worse than any potential punishment. I never smacked my children and my children have never smacked their children. They resort to the 'naughty step' approach. Our rationale for this is that it says a lot about an adult if s/he has to resort to violence to win an argument. Explanation and reasoning is much more productive. Whilst this article isn't directly related to corporal punishment, it does look into the effects of children witnessing violence. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-17600454
  17. Comment From PFC123 It dosent sit well with me that we have shafted CVA creditors once, and will do it twice now... avoiding points deductions sets a precedent to all other clubs to ditch their debt and copy us. £130 - £0 in 2 years with no punishment LOL Damn you Trousers!

  19. The best secretary ever to work for me was male.
  20. There wasn't a girls' football team at the school before he worked there. He started the team from scratch.
  21. My SiL (a primary school teacher) was ecstatic last week as his girls' football team had finally won a match. He's been coaching them for a year almost and says he's amazed at how talented some of them are. I regularly (try to) play football with my younger grandchildren. My granddaughter (nearly 4) is great at dribbling (yeah, yeah, I know ) and I showed her last week how to kick with the inside and outside of her foot as well as with her toes. She also does great 'goalie' kicks as she calls them. But she has great co-ordination as is already quite good at tennis and hitting golf balls. My grand-son (just 3) isn't so good but he's left footed, although right handed, so we'll have to encourage him.
  22. Rochdale has a very distinctive accent, I think.

  24. You're right of course. But they had a referendum a few years ago on whether or not to have the Queen as head of state. So that's a form of self-determination, I think.
