Why would anyone buy a football club when there are other investment options?
TopGun replied to TopGun's topic in The Lounge
That's a view I wholly accept also. Which puts vain-glorious egos like Mike Wilde into context also. It's a mistake Saints must learn from. Although who are Saints to check that at the moment... It also hasn't stopped Abramavich loading Chelsea with football-related debt so if he were to sell the club they could be back where they were or even worse. -

Well, hydro needs a bit of gravity for sure. But wave and tidal don't. I just need to check it out a bit more!! -

I was thinking of starting small... just one or two hydro/tidal/wave machines... But with Saints, I have long thought that it could work as a successful vehicle for a large shipping company that wants more European portside space. For example, Hutchison Whampoa are a big Chinese shipping company who regularly lament the lack of Euro facilities for their long haul shipping interests. Plenty of redundant or under used/underdeveloped dock space at Southampton... buy the club; get the local stakeholder buy in; buy or lease port land; develop it; create jobs. Everyone's a winner! -
I think this thread about Knoxy could be amalgamated with the Berlusconi thread anyway. I'm sure he wants her and is considering pardoning her. He won't pay her cash of course as we know.

I like Frankie. Very infectious.

Congratulations. However, I lost about 3,000 posts on the switchover to the new site. Good thing I'm not so sad that I wasn't watching or anything silly like that!!!! Nor did I complain to Baj, really!

Probably true but I have come to realise that growing spuds involves some effort and it is not my core business. I would neglect them after investing in tatty barrels and some form of fertiliser. Even if I was successful I would have too many at one go and I would have to give them away. So, for me, the odd can of value tinned potatoes at 20p a pop is the cupboard answer for the odd desire I have. But I admire your sentiments 1976!

Both above posts I agree with but still not proper investment sense. Saints are prob worth a punt for profit in L1 as they could be sold for more in PL but still a risk unless in it for love or to use the club as a marketing vehicle locally for something else. Chelsea/Man U etc are just marketing vehicles/personal whims but even they are loaded with debt transferred on to the club by their speculative owners. In these economic times I think I would build or buy a power plant that would give me guaranteed income for 25 years and no worries about people, media, fans, players etc. I must be mad. -
Given a choice of a possibly deadly night with an orange in my mouth and noose about my neck or a possibly deadly night with Foxy Knoxy, I guess it'll be the oranges unless I want to wait 15 years for the same options!

When I am feeling cheap and lazy I quite like a cold potato salad with potatoes from a tin. A few herbs and some olive oil to lift the deal and you could almost sell it to your mum!

Good dialogue from TL IMO. He appears to understand the value of stakeholder communications, something RL had contempt for. I hope TL means what he says about transparency, and if he does, then keep going Tony. I'm sure that an investment already of seven figures will not end in nought. I have no reason to doubt TL's statements so far. They seem in very good faith.

Can't argue with that Huffton! Bournemouth is better than I thought. Not sure it could cope with regular heavy aircraft though. On the subject of low flying aircraft over Soton I'll never forget a night walking down the Inner Avenue on my way to the Guidedog in Feb 1991... All of a sudden, there was a massive roar and a phalanx of F1-11s flew over. I got to the pub and informed people that the bombing of Iraq was about to happen. I got back about 1am and turned on the radio to hear that Desert Storm (air raid bits) was underway.

IMO Johnny is right. The "oil lot" as mentioned are actually construction workers, not refinery operatives. They were employed as contract staff as is usual in construction to fulfil elements of a build project. That part of the build has ended. That there are foreign employees on other ongoing parts of the build should have no reckoning at all. Under EU law and by virtue of expertise. You don't hire a plumber to build you a wall. Unite and GMB recognise that which is why they have not sanctioned the unofficial action.

Hate to **** on your chips but putting a 747 on Bournemouth would be like parking a tank in a disabled bay. Doable but not preferable. Maintenance - On-site maintenance checks are available on a wide range of aircraft including the Boeing 727, 737 family, 757 and 767, as well as the Airbus A300, A310 and A320 family. http://www.bournemouthairport.com/bohweb.nsf/Content/FactsAndFigures

If you are prepared to work with the system, it's probable that it will help your old rellies. Recent experience of this. Packed Nana off last month at 91.

My farts smell about 10 times worst in the morning
TopGun replied to scott_saints's topic in The Muppet Show
I think people should be charged for farting as it releases man made greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. People should fart in bottles and heat their houses from it. -
Rather horrifically, I think there is a BNP element on this site :-(

I agree with you TDD. Good to see you again. That's good money in one sense as you can't spend it at sea and I guess many of your colleagues have fairly cheap naval accommodation on land. But I accept that some of the pay is for a possibly dangerous and certainly isolated job when at sea. Good pension though as well.

It also said that Mars might crash into Venus and I was quite surprised that it reckoned us Earthlings would be fine! Just a big spark in the sky to watch and no fall out for us! Yay!

I was in London on Wednesday and it was sh1t. It reminded me why I moved away 10 years ago. I had to walk from Euston to Covent Garden as there were no tubes and consequently no vacant taxis. Everyone was doing the same so the roads and the pavements were totally congested. It was ****ing with rain so I had to stop at a tourist shop and buy a naff umbrella for about £500 (I was going to a presentation so needed to stay dry) and there were frigging roadworks all the way (through Russell Square etc) which added to the general chaos. After the presentation (which did go well and was in Southampton Street) I had a nice meal at Palm Court on Covent Garden that steeled me for the trip back to Euston. Actually found a cab but it took 50 mins to get to Euston and cost £15 for two miles. Was bloody happy to get on the train and get whisked back to civilised Manchester!!! As for the RMT, 5% pay demands and no compulsory redundancies in these economic climes? Ficking idiots. How hard can it be to steer and stop a tube train? Grrr!
