You sure? You think our players over the last few years have been turning down opportunities to play for the biggest clubs in the country and earn astronomical salaries, because they all enjoyed playing with their mates? Are you serious? The reason all this is happening this summer is because, for the first time in their careers, they proved last season with their performances that they were capable of playing for the big boys. We had a "loyal and committed team" up to now because we were their best bet up until now. When the big boys have come for our players, they've got them. Oxlade-Chamberlain is proof of that
-
Can you please tell us all which of these players had, prior to this summer, top clubs prepared to meet our inflated valuations of them and be prepared to pay them 6 figure weekly salaries? How many clubs that finished below us last season have players the big boys a)want and b)are prepared to pay 20m+ fees for?

It's interesting that Harrison Reed was given a new contract before Cork...
-
We probably haven't offered them mega money for a start due to his contract situation. Burnley have to make a decision on what is more important to them: their top goalscorer from last season whose goals might keep them up (stress on the 'might') or a decent fee now that they can use to invest. Difficult decision for them to make. I doubt Ings is making life difficult either. Worst case scenario he goes on a free next summer and has the pick of a few clubs that will be in for him and, as is likely with free transfers, gets a better financial deal as a result. Win/win

Will this be the best transfer window for Saints ever?
Verbal Kint replied to Mallagroth's topic in The Saints
All very well and good except that clearly isn't what we had. We didn't have a group of young players wanting to play for the shirt. Luke Shaw ASKED to leave Calum Chambers has ASKED to leave Adam Lallana threatened to go on strike in order to leave For the very talented players we bring through we are a stepping stone. £££££ talks -
I think that's completely wrong. Lots of conspiracy theories going on but my gut feel is it's nothing more than Reed thinking these offers are too good to turn down. If you were a Liverpool fan would you think Lallana and Lovren were worth 25 million and 20 million respectively? I doubt it. Reed (and probably Koeman) probably believe they can replace these players with similar/better quality from abroad for much cheaper prices. We'll have a good idea come the end of the window if they were right

Jose Mourinho: Signing Luke Shaw would have "killed" Chelsea
Verbal Kint replied to doddisalegend's topic in The Saints

I was tempted to ask him the same thing. Hopefully not
-
££££££££££. They want to go and earn substantially more money elsewhere. Lallana's dad even said that to a poster who is friends with him.
-
The difference is everyone knew when Lowe did it the money wouldn't be re-invested in bringing in quality players. Bernard, Davenport, quashie, Kenyon, jakobsson, higginbotham, prutton, le saux, Nilsson. The list is endless of utter dross, accompanied by managerial appointments of stuart gray and steve ****ing wigley. I'm personally going to wait and see who we bring in before making a judgement
-
Despite the conspiracy theories, this is the most likely scenario. I think RK probably feels the bids we are getting are too big to turn down and that he can replace them with equal/better players for much less than we're getting. Clubs competing for the top 4 can't afford to take many risks, hence the premium they're prepared to pay for premier league proven players. The only deal we have done that I wouldn't have sanctioned is Chambers (think he'll be worth 20m+ in a few years) but 16m is hardly peanuts. It's still a good fee for a player with only 20 odd starts under his belt
-
Oh that's all we had to do. Just give him 50 million quid, plus added money on the wage bill, and everything would be fine. Would you have given him the 50 million quid to bring in 1 or 2 more Osvaldos? Just give him 50 million. Jesus, the way fans throw that figure of money around like its nothing is ridiculous. KL has put enough money in as it is
-
It's incredibly difficult to get right as we've seen with sunderland, qpr and spurs. BUT it has to be said that the players those clubs brought in were all unbelievably average. If we bring in quality players then we could be fine, even if we have a slow start
-
Maybe it is simply that Les et all feel they're getting very big fees, perhaps a lot more than they're worth, and that when spent wisely will leave us in better shape? But this will involve so many changes to the squad it just feels totally mad and a serious gamble. Has Koeman really signed off on this many going? This would be a good time for Guan to leak the club's thinking
-
Because every club in the land knows it's a load ********. Every player has his price
-
I reckon his agent would have leaked that to the press if he had one
-
Have they? I think most people are saying it's because players are chasing £££££. The rumours are Cardiff will offer him a longer deal on more money. Good luck to him if so, he's at an age now where the extra year or two offered is significant. Despite what everyone on here is saying, he's very replaceable if the funds are given to the manager to spend
-
Only the really good ones go on to that sort of age. He's a decent centre half and has proven he is capable at Prem level. BUT he's 30, has one or two years left at best and 5 million would be a great price for him as long as we invest the money well. If we replaced Shaw, Lovren and Fonte with De Vrij, Rojo, Van Dijk and 30 million profit we'll have done excellent business. That's the key to everything that's going on this summer. We're getting excellent fees for players and IF we invest the money well we could look back and say this was a great summer for us. If...

How many more signings do you think we'll make ?
Verbal Kint replied to Saints boy in Leeds's topic in The Saints
If we had lost nobody (excluding Osvaldo) then I would have thought we would have looked to add 3 to the current squad. We will lose 4, so I think 7 is needed for us to have any chance of standing still. We could potentially make that 6 if we can find a CB equally comfortable at LB. 4 more to come in then assuming Lovren goes and nobody else -
And he was worth a lot more than that. Morgan is still pretty young, has 3 years left on his contract and is now a French international. We should hold out for big big money for him, just like we did with Shaw. I'd be disappointed with less than 25m, but I doubt he'll go for that much

Khedira only has 12 months left on his contract

CONFIRMED - Steven Caulker - DONE DEAL (loan)
Verbal Kint replied to washsaint's topic in The Saints
"Crystal Palace had also matched the fee and offered wages of around £42,000 a week but QPR have bettered those terms and convinced the former Tottenham defender that a move to Loftus Road, where he will figure alongside Rio Ferdinand, can propel him back into the international fold." The sort of wages he'll be on are probably at the very top end of what we can offer. I don't think he's good enough to justify that -

I'd love us to do it, but I don't think we can afford to be paying a player 40k a week to train with the reserves
