  1. A torrid brace of away defeats to title contenders have been a salutary lesson in how far we have to go to break into the top 4.
  2. Arrivederci Danni !
  3. Some of us been saying this for done time but it's not been a popular view till now
  4. Windmill. Great memories of great goals. Does he still breed and train race horses - he had a first rate second career in that arena? I must confess to not knowing these footnotes to his football career: After Southampton[edit] He lasted barely a month at Newcastle before joining Bristol Rovers. His impressive career seemingly on the decline, he failed to score in nine games for Bristol Rovers before a sudden departure again, this time to Norwich City where, at the age of 34, he found some of his old touch. He played 88 games over three seasons, scoring 16 goals, and suffered a mixed end to his Norwich career in 1985 when the club won the League Cup — Channon's second and final domestic honour — with a 1–0 win over Sunderland at Wembley, but were then relegated (with Sunderland) at the end of the same season. Channon joined Portsmouth and Finn Harps (where he played in 1 League of Ireland Cup game) thereafter,[1] before retiring from the game in 1986.
  5. There is an architectural problem with Emirates that also kills atmosphere: The corporate boxes form a ring around the entire stadium at mid-terrace level, forming a very effective fire-break that prevents large scale, en-masse singing spreading across large banks of fans. The top tier is totally cut off from the lower half. Apparently Arsenal realise this but are stumped as to what to do about it. They can't redesign the incredibly expensive stadium. Might be looking at 'safe' standing areas. This, combined with an ABC fan base, and tourists with iPads makes for a theatre matinee atmosphere.
  6. The whole iPad/iphone filming stuff phenomenon is a major factor killing live entertainment atmospheres, not just football. Go to a gig and all the lemmings there are watching it gormlessly through their screens, jaws slackly agape, tongue lolling half out, shoulders hunched over slightly in a bent posture, as they record it all - but for what? They aren't really there and not immersed in the live entertainment, and are detracting from the very experience they have come to apparently be part of and ****ing film. It is purely vicarious attendance and the sole point seems to be the ability to bore to death your work/class mates and extended family on Monday morning by making them view your pathetic little video.
  7. This tells you what are the big clubs if all-time attendance is the main criterion: We are 1 spot above the blue few. http://web.archive.org/web/20120111003541im_/http://nufc.com/2011-12images/attendances-all-time.gif
  8. Spurs maybe 'big', 'huge', 'massive', 'colossal' even. But they've consistently under-achieved and show no signs of changing that trait. They won the league twice half a century ago, and since then have been plucky Cup specialists.
  9. It was obvious these stories would surface with spurs hammering at city and us doing well with a trendy foreign hotshot young coach. As someone else mentioned the irritating thing is the assumption implied in the articles that Tottenham only need click their fingers as Poch would come running. Like Saints are inherently undesirable to the point of leprosy.
  10. It's hard to convey the magnitude of winning the Cup back then, to people under the age of 40. It was the Blue Riband event of the season, simply a huge event.
  11. No it is not - he's a big name who plays for the biggest club on the planet.
  12. Looks like the table will assume a more 'natural' order after the end of today. Us in about the right place, competing with Everton for lower end of the Euro spots. Still, not bad and at the start of the season would have been delighted to be told we'd be in this place at end of November.
  13. It does give me pleasure to see Spurs humiliated, although I like AVB. Might make their cocky fans bit less insufferable.

    MOTD

"Nope" and "Yep" are used to impart a weary, but cocky and sarcastic tone to a reply in any post.
  15. The problem is simply that Lambert's alternative - Danni O - is not firing on all cylinders. It hasn't gone to plan in that respect and this is the conundrum that needs a big decision come Jan. There is still time for DO to get a run in the side and prove us wrong but time is fast ebbing away, as is our tilt at the title. The scoring issue is not a problem when you have the 2nd tightest defence in Europe, but as soon as they get injuries or the keeper loses his head a bit, the paucity of 'goals for' come right back into the equation. On another note, I can also sort of now appreciate why Fergie et al didn't like their top players doing International Friendlies.
  16. I would tend to agree that if Lambert is tired and off form presently we should give DO a run. But if that is subsequently judged a failure then a parting of the ways would likely occur in Jan.
  17. But the fact that he's not earned a run in the team is determined by his performance in training and in matches.
  18. I agree he's a misfit here. The obligation now to clap fans is as crass as the one that says you shouldn't celebrate goals against your old club.
  19. It makes shocking viewing.
  20. His body language is tellingly ominous. Not settled, happy or on same wavelength as his peers. More robust than the gash, but it's not looking good.
  21. Why should players feel obliged to clap the fans? Maybe he hates it here and can't wait to get back to Italy, so doesn't see any point in taking part in all that fan-clapping twaddle.
  22. Whats the nature of Shaw's injury?
  23. Few sides will get such possession stats at Emirates
  24. Osvaldo to fade away to oblivion like Gashton, or is their still hope?
