I don't get the recent (last decade really) push back against the Olympics due to cost. Lots of things that aren't necessary cost a lot of money. What a boring existence where we don't pay for anything unless it's vital to sustaining human life. I'd wager as well that the financial benefit in short and long term is far greater than the cost.
