Churchill got 72% of the vote for his Woodford constituency in the 1945 election, more than for the 1950 and 1951 elections. That wouldnt have happened if the public were disaffected with him personally after the war. I agree with Charlie. My understanding was that Churchill was popular but Labour had the winning policies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodford_%28UK_Parliament_constituency%29

Its pretty shocking the US Government dont even know how many the police kill each year. From the best information available it seems as though the police killed at least 930 members of the public people in 2014 whilst only 51 police were killed by citizens. That alone is a damning statistic. http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/a-new-estimate-of-killings-by-police-is-way-higher-and-still-too-low/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_police_officers_killed_in_the_line_of_duty

We dont give that much - its about £8bn nett from a Government spend of c£650bn. Part of the reason for the deficit is that the UK doesnt apply for much of the funds available through programmes like Interreg (regional development) and Life (environmental protection).

The real problem stems from over expansion. If it had remained as a group of countries with broadly similar economies and standard of living - France, Germany, Benelux and Scandinavia we wouldnt have most of the current issues related to 'overpayment or immigration.

They couldnt prove he fired the fatal 49 shots because other police officers shot at them another 88 times. So thats alright then. http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/may/23/cleveland-officer-not-guilty-shot-137-times-police

People talk as if the EU is some formed entity with a single mind and intent. It isnt - it changes with every election and with every event. Cameron's vow to negotiate a better deal is a sham. The EU's policy is set by 28 countries, that isnt going to be overthrown to suit on party in in one country. Cameron will ask for, and probably get, some smoke and mirrors and window dressing but nothing substantive will change as a result. Imo events in Greece and Ukraine have created a much bigger pressure for change. The big drivers for ever greater integration, France and Germany have been rattled by the vulnerabilities of the EU project, by the prospect of it all falling apart. Its that which will prompt a genuine review of the way the EU develops in the future.

Now we've got Benefits Street. Thank God for progress.

Who knows, it was probably a lifetime achievement award rather than any one specific thing.

Those two things aren't contradictory.

and anyone who called him out on his thrilled pleasure in human tragedy was angrily attacked as a government paid shill sent to disrupt his exposes and keep state secrets - as if he were either important or accurate. The Sarnia Saint of conspiracy theories. tbf though it generated a cracking confession from CB Fry who was considering a new MI5 offer on good money to hound out a violent revolutionary from a popular carp fishing forum.

Thank **** for that then Spudders. Ive had all the golf stories I can manage.

Of course its a massive generalisation - comparing a whole continent and a country of 320 million people. It is based in truth though. The American police and justice system tends to deal with protestors more harshly, although I accept there are many examples in Europe too.

Yep, he's giving them Wales.

I used to work for a foundation - an organisation which gives money to charities. We used to get invitations to lunch with Prince Charles, which were just and hour and a half of being asked for money his pet projects, so no-one used to go there either

Between 2001 and 2015 the US suffered a total of 6,848 deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan, and about 392,000 shooting deaths at home. Death by shooting will likely exceed car crash deaths for the first time in 2015. http://icasualties.org/

One of the main reasons Greenpeace and most other civil disobedience NGOs have never taken off in the US in the way they have in Europe is the American police and justice system. Crimes which in Europe would have you asked politely to move on or arrested and fined if you persisted would be dealt with by a baton beating and jail time in the US - relatively innocuous stuff too like blocking a power plant entrance.
