  1. Wes doesn't like facts, so here is one just for him. BP makes more in one day than the entire British fishing industry does in a year. Also its been said before but bears repeating. Brits mostly don't like the fish found in British waters. Thats why British owners sold the permits. This is where our fish and chips comes from - at sea for nine weeks near the Arctic nad only comes into Hull one every two months to unload and refuel - almost zero benefit to the local economy. Little blue boats bobbing around in coastal communities as in Wes' dreams, not so much.

I'm saying hard chopping and changing the rules and inconsistency breeds contempt - 'you can do this now, today but not later, tomorrow or yesterday'. It's much better to have a consistent core pattern of restrictions which everyone knows, with additional measures which are gently tightened or relaxed depending on infection rates. As my 15yr old daughter says "it makes no sense we spend all day together in class with no ventilation and then at 3pm we're separated and not even allowed to walk home together".

Depends who you listen to. This guy below was fairly graphic - no point meeting your family at Christmas if it means burying them in January and February. Second one below, no idea why I cant separate.

I don't mind if you kill yourself, it saves on the pension. However, not sure if you know, but the health effects of drinking too much aren't infectious. It's only you who dies, no-one is going to catch it from you.
  6. That was the social contract. it's not now. The focus has switched away from rewarding work to rewarding inheritance and holding assets
  7. I thought you'd be upset Thatcher's legacy is being turned on its head. Instead of a property owning democracy rewarding individual effort it how rewards corporatism and the wealthy at the expense of the 98% 1. Its harder to get on the housing ladder. In 1965 the average age of first home purchase was 23. Now its 34. 2. Housing is being concentrated into fewer hands, a trend not seen since the industrial revolution. In 2003 there were 5 million homes owned by people under 45. In 2017 it had dropped by 32% to 3.45m. By contrast private renting increased from 1.05m households to 2.55m 3. Average household debt is up from 32% of income in 1997 to 148% in 2019.
  8. The rich have got much richer and society much more unequal. Housing has become unaffordable even for many people in work. Still fuck em eh? as long as the people you tug your forelock to are okay.
  9. I believe you
  10. The whole thing has gone over your head. Corbyn is anti Zionist - he thinks the Palestinians have been shafted by Zionist factions in Israel. That doesn't make him anti semitic. However other elements of the pro Palestine lobby within Labour didn't make that distinction and their hate was directed at Jews in general. Corbyn is accused not being robust enough in handling that.
  11. Here's a little homily for you Wes. In 1983 Thailand's main export, by a factor of three ahead of fruit, was rice. Now rice and fruit don't even make the top 10. Why? because they've been displaced by computers, followed by electronics, machinery, vehicles, chemicals, plastics, gems, metals and medical supplies. Rinse and repeat for China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, India etc etc The rest of the world has industrialised in the past 50 years. As a consequence Britain's share of world trade has declined, along with the share of every other developed nation. We haven't got poorer, its just we haven't got more wealthy at the same rate as those countries starting from a low base. Why? global capitalism which wants to find the lowest costs of production. As a nation we have been saved by the growth in service exports - banking, insurance, accountancy, law which has offset losses from manufacturing. The UK, US and Western Europe doesn't have the industrialised playground to itself anymore - that's the cause of the changes you've seen in your lifetime. Yes the EU is to some extent a protectionist bubble. It has created a way for wealthy countries to stay wealthy and sell to each other without having their industries totally ripped apart by Chinese and Indian cars produced for £5,000 instead of £30,000. The US has done the same. You can blame the EU for the effects of globalisation all you want - but it was one of the things we had going for us in a competitive world. If you think we can compete on a level playing field with China or India you are wrong. NB. I know you won't get it, indeed won't even try to think about the issues - but them's the facts. The whole world economy has changed since you were a boy, no matter how facile the 'Global Britain' bluster you come back with. Share of world trade
  12. People's allegiances are to the party not to the leader. If you believed in Brexit you'd take the Brexit minister's job - even in Theresa May's government - exactly because you disagreed with her and wanted to advocate for your vision.
  13. a2 + b2 = c2 Note: c is the longest side of the triangle a and b are the other two sides Yours sincerely, the M23
  14. F'sure. I suspect the deal has been known for some time but its been in both sides interest to appear big and tough. The EU's fishery demands have been deliberately overstated so that when the deal comes it will look like the EU have caved giving a victory for Sir Boris the Brave on the sideshow whilst caving on the real meat of the deal, level playing field .
  15. Exactly. Its a tiny industry whose problems stem from the actions of British permit holders and the British Government. Yes small scale fishermen have been screwed but it very little to do with the EU who get the blame. https://www.greenpeace.org.uk/news/uncovered-rich-list-codfathers-dominating-uks-fishing-industry/ https://unearthed.greenpeace.org/2019/03/07/fishing-brexit-uk-fleetwood/
  16. Jeez this is dull. We want things from the EU. Weirdly enough in return they want things from us. We want our stuff to be multi year. They want their stuff to be multi year. All this whaaaaaabulance stuff about infringing our sovereignty is just juvenile.
  17. That is Britain wanting to roll over existing arrangements. Very different to insisting on cherry picking.
  18. Not as far as Im aware. So you agree it makes no sense for us to demand it.
  19. Yep. The number of otherwise beautiful women with frickin awful badly executed tattoos. If you have to get one at least get it done by somebody who can actually draw and has some artistic ability.
  20. Are we asking for annual reviews of our tariff free access to the single market or do we want an open ended long term deal?
  21. and they don't even know or admit its a shit show.

Exactamundo. Plus its not a lockdown - just some fairly minor measures to reduce transmission. Restaurants and clubs are still for instance.
