Actually, make that 12 x £50,000 in debt - forgot it was a monthly tax bill! So I'm over half a million in 'debt' to the country as things stand! :-)

By Jove....I've worked out what the problem is here. It's the mis-labelling of the student fees as "debt". The student fees aren't 'debt' in the true sense of the word. It's effectively a future monthly payment to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. In other words it's a relatively small amount of additional tax wrapped up indifferent words. I know that I will have to pay the exchequer around £2,000 a month for the next 25 years or so. Does that make me in debt by £50,000 as of today? Using the same logic as the anti fees brigade, the answer is yes. Everyone: take a step back for a moment and look at the fees in a new light - they are simply an extension to your monthly/annual/lifetime tax commitments. And those who are better off tend to pay more tax. It all seems pretty logical to me. It's the mis-use of the word 'debt' that is confusing people... Strewth, I'm too profound for my own good sometimes.... ;-)

FWIW I think that students studying on 'essential to the country' courses (e.g. Medicine) should qualify for a partial exemption. I'm broadly in favour of the scheme the coalition is proposing (and praise Clegg and Co for making their decisions based on 'being in government' rather than taking the much easier path of standing by 'promises' that they could only be expected to keep if they were still a small opposition party spouting what they liked from the sidelines) but feel it could be refined in some aspects.

Did he drop any subtle hints as to whether our ultimate push for the Premier League title would need to be largely 'self financing' or whether Markus )and now his family) have already ring-fenced funds from his personal wealth for that eventuality? You won't get an answer to that one. Well, not a plausible one anyway. This protest (and others) is simply an ideological 'class war' attack against the 'nasty' Tories. As you rightly allude to, there was no such protests when Labour introduced what was a far more unfair and penalistic fee system in the first place. Still, let's not let the facts get in the way of a good old march eh...It beats actually learning stuff in a classroom all day...

Could it be 'forces' from other club(s) who don't want to see Saints accelerate through the leagues? Jealous of our financial clout? Cortese also alludes to people perhaps trying to scupper a big sponsorship deal. Perhaps one of the potential sponsor's commercial rivals are trying to derail those negotiations. All highly unlikely I guess but intriguing all the same...

My answerr to the poll is "it depends". For example, if I was to attend a "local Derby" (e.g. vs Bournemouth ;-) ) with a friend then I'd prefer to stand up and soak up the atmospjere whereas if I'm going to watch Brentford with my 9 year old son (for example) then I'd prefer to sit. Perhaps the poll should be phrased more generically along the lines of whether we'd like to see standing return as an option or keep all seater stadiums rather than as a personal preference question. I suspect you'd gt a different result eitehr way.
