Are you sure it isn't sooner than that? 24th August is only 19 days before the start of the season. -
I wasn't questioning if Watkins was good enough or not. My point was that a club like Saints isn't going to sign a player for circa £20m and then loan him straight back out. We tend to wait until they fail here first before we loan them out! 😉

I don't think he did ever say Spurs were offering £25m. Plus BBC Radio Solent are saying it is up-to £20m with add-ons...

He joined Shrewsbury on 31st January, so there wasn't much time for him between that and the League One season ending in March. He played 5 league games for them in that time.

Saints aren't going to beat a host of other Premier League clubs and sign Watkins for circa £20m only to loan him back to the Championship. That is unrealistic and nonsensical.

Clubs are restricted in terms of the number of senior players, so it is sensible to try and shift them first. If you brought in players before you made room in the squad for them then you'd be screwed if you were then unable to shift the players you no longer want. We already have a lot of players we can't sell.
