I thought Drogba was going to join us, but couldn't get a work permit? Then along comes another premier league club with a higher profile, and it suddenly wasn't a problem. Or am I thinking of someone else? -
The article does say there are a number of proposals, all of which after the 6-8 year point would be back on annual inspection. I think it is reasonable that newer cars don't need quite as much in the way of MoTs as they need to be maintained at the correct intervals to maintain the warranty. This maintainance would be more thorough than the MoT anyway, and if a fault is found it is fixed. Only an idiot would buy a car and not want to keep the warranty valid.

According to telegraph, the officer was shot dead during an armed guard changeover. Apparently the mayor of southampton (or one of his party) helped disarm the shooter. RIP -
I'm having the same thoughts going through my head. If I volunteer for the first tranche of redundancies, i'd be 40 days short of the 18 year point (put that into the calculator, and for a level 7 higher PO it's quite an attractive sum) I'd be 37 when I leave, and as a fairly intelligent chap i'd hope to get a decent job when I go, and someone would consider me to be fairly employable. I'd like to do something completely different to what i've been doing in the mob, but have no idea what I can do that will pay a decent enough wage to pay the mortgage. Ideally redundancy in the second trance for the IP (but a much reduced payout) would suit me better.

Weirdly, i'm more upset at the passing of a dog than a person. I think it is down to the amount of death we see in the media. You kinda get desensitised to it.

Only if you have an old/sh*t car. You are burning fuel and only turning it to heat, not motion. A waste of energy. A modern engine burns NO fuel when you lift off the accelerator as long as you are still moving, as well explained above by so22saint.

Its a 54 plate, so possibly the same shape, although not necessarily the same engine. (1.9 Diesel) The 70mpg is rare, but on my daily Basingstoke to Portsmouth commute I usually get low to mid 60's. I don't necessarily drive slowly all the time either, just don't welly it to overtake, and sit at around 60mph. It adds 5 mins to the journey, but saves me about 15% on fuel costs, which when you do 100 miles a day commuting soon adds up. You also have to bear in mind that the 70mpg comes from the dashboard computer, so is not 100% accurate, although using an Android app (Free - Fuel Friend Lite) I am averaging 57.15mpg for all journeys at a cost of 11p a mile. That is actually about the same cost per mile that I had with a petrol vectra about 10 years ago.

If you take your car out of gear and coast down a hill, you use MORE fuel than in you left it in gear. Modern engines are designed to use no fuel when you coast, so by taking it out of gear the engine will tick over and still be consuming fuel. I am currently regularly getting my diesel Passat estate to do over 60mpg (sometimes as much as 70mpg) by driving sensibly. 1. Leave in gear going down hills. 2. Getting behind HGVs will reduce air resistance, and also make you drive at an economical speed - you don't need to drive too close (Audi distance, as Jeremy Clarkson calls it) for this to help, and you should use your common sense and not do this in bad weather. HGVs do 56mph on motorways, which happens to be about the most economical speed for most cars. Keeping speed down is by far the biggest saver of money. 3. Read the road ahead - braking = wasted money. If you see a traffic queue, coast towards it rather than braking when you get to it. 4. Don't accelerate hard. Gradually increase speed. Try not to accelerate uphill - keep constant speed and accelerate downhill. 5. Do you really need your air con on? At low speeds open your window (at high speeds this will increase drag, so you are better with the air con.) If you do need it on, try to alternate between economy mode and normal (i.e. turn it on and off) and use recirculate mode to keep the cool air in. 6. Check you haven't left seat heaters and windscreen/wing mirror heaters on. 7. Only use headlights when you have to - when they are on you are requiring over 100w more power, which has to come from somewhere 8. If in a traffic queue that is going nowhere, turn your engine off 9. Diesels are most economical at the 1.5 to 2k rpm, and petrol cars should try to keep below 3k.

Interesting that the bedpan isn't listed under the future stadiums. LOL @ fratton park - 19th in the Championship. At least next season they could have the 5th biggest stadium in their league. -

Had to laugh at work today. We had a brief from the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (worth giving to by the way, if you are inclined) and the guy had a load of Pompey vs Derby tickets to give away. When he asked if anyone wanted any, it was a proper tumbleweed moment. Only one guy in the whole room sheepishly put his hand up. It's funnier because we are actually in Portsmouth. He also struggles to give the tickets away for most matches (although apparently didn't have a problem giving them away for the Leeds match - to Leeds fans!)

Some people really don't know facts before getting on their soap box. The cost will be picked up by the home office, the same as it is now, and the same as it will always be. Sometimes I don't think it should be - like the drug addict I once got called to, who just wanted a fix - at a cost of about £100k to the taxpayer.

We already have a part privatised service. The coastguard helicopters are not run by the coastguard - it used to be Bristow, and now I think it is Bond. The result is more modern helicopters - faster and more efficient. Having actually been a SAR dope on a rope, I can say the Sea Kings were knackered when I was flying on them, and they've had another 10 years since. They are past it. The new contracts will still have military aircrew in civilian owned aircraft, so skills will be retained. The current Sea King force (I think with the exception of Culdrose, although I could be wrong) is maintained by civilian contractors. So apart from losing a few backseat military crew, it is likely that we will get a more modern SAR force, with a good sikorski airframe which is already working well in Stornoway, to replace our vintage sea kings. The only thing that will probably be wrong about the whole contract is the amount we will end up paying for it.
