  1. No, the RCMP is definitely not "an arm" of the federal government. Sure, it is mandated to enforce federal law; but it is also contracted to enforce provincial law in 8 provinces (Ontario and Quebec have their own provincial police forces). It also enforces municipal law in about 200 municipalities, and it is the police force for about 200 aboriginal communities. We do not live in a police state. The police do not operate under the direct supervision of government. In democracies there is a separation between law-making and law-enforcing. The police work independently to enforce law and to maintain order. That you don't understand this basic distinction is typical. And then you have the nerve to accuse me of "splitting hairs".
  2. The government doesn't confiscate guns. Perhaps you're thinking of the R.C.M.P. Here are some facts about the long-gun registry from Statistics Canada: The Registry was set up in 1995. The cost of the Registry from 1995-2009 was $1.23 billion (not $5 billion). From 1995-2010 there was a 41% reduction in homicides by long guns. As of September, 2011 these are the number of long-guns registered: 7,137,386 non-restricted firearms; 528,323 restricted firearms; 200,285 prohibited firearms. Weapons confiscated by the police would have been those falling under the "prohibited" category.
  3. Nice photo!

  6. It's being live streamed from the Club's OS. Will start at KO.
  7. Great photo - thanks!
  8. Sarcastic? Yes. Same meaning for GPS?
  9. Tadic replaces Ward-Prowse.
  10. Tadic is "putting on his GPS vest" before coming on. So he doesn't get lost?
  11. The Quick20 goalie does some Boruc-styled dribbling in the box - and gets away with it!
  12. Juanmi scores #9, made by a good move from Rodriguez.
  13. Good free-kick shot from W-P from 25 yards. Saved by their keeper.
  14. Ward-Prowse blasts it over the bar.
  15. Turnbull heads in the 8th goal from a corner.
  16. Commentators are in stereo!
  17. The Club site has a video with RK talking about today's game. It includes the three goals. [video=youtube;5WYg-bXGLWs]
  18. Merci pour votre long service au Club. Bonne chance.
  19. Not a fair comparison. The confederate flag, like the swastika, is freighted with specific connotations. There is just no getting around the fact that it came to represent a predominantly southern, reactionary, "good ol' boy" attitude which supported segregation and white supremacy - regardless of the additional anti-Yankee sentiment (a clear residue of post-Civil War resentment). That dominant aura of discrimination and racist hatred explains, as I see it, why Sarnia Saint removed the flag as his avatar so quickly. A step too far - even for him.
  20. There could be Heroes and Villains.
  21. You don't need fifteen periods (full stops) at the end of every sentence. One will do.
  22. Parenthetical means the same as "in parentheses" - i.e., in curved brackets. Just another way of introducing another thought, an extra idea, an interesting aside. Here's an example: He went down to the pub (after an early evening meal). The phrase in the curved brackets is parenthetical.
  23. Ahh, yes, I recognise that: it's "Happy-Clappy Talk".
  24. Not a Haiku - which has three lines: 5 syllables, 7 syllables, and 5 syllables. Toby now is gone, Spurred on by money and fame; A Saint no longer.
