  1. The team will look a different in a few weeks time. And nobody wants to be way out in front at Christmas, those teams always drop back and are lucky to make the playoffs. Chill folks, the party has only just begun!
  2. A few years ago we went over on a Sunday from Portsmouth for a daytrip, fast cat both ways with P&O but Brittany Ferries run Portsmouth-Caen, Portsmouth - Cherbourg and Poole-Cherbourg until the end of October. We went up to Arromanches for lunch, Coleville cemetery and Bayeux for the tapestry. A great day out. On the same crossing a couple of weeks before, I was going down to the car when another passenger looked out of the window and said 'Hm, looks a bit different from the last time I was here'. He didn't look older than 50 but he had been on an LST that had got stuck all day on the beach between tides. He said that they found out that if they stopped shooting at the Germans then they would stop shooting back so there was nothing they could do except wait.
  3. I was in a bar in Paris for the 50th anniversary of the landings. I met an american chap there called William J. Perret (I think). He was an 18 year old coxswain on a landing craft on Omaha (I think). He said he had been at Slapton Sands, D-Day, Guadacanal (or was it Iwo Jima?) He sent me a package with some facsimiles from the day. If I can find them I'll let you have copies.
  4. It takes far less land to grow food than it does to grow meat. The trouble with this veggie stuff is... ...it tastes like sh!t.
  5. What do we want? - Instant gratification! When do we want it? NOW!
  6. Never mind the question as to whether Davies pushed Fonte, ask yourself why two of their players were unmarked on the 6-yard line.
  7. I once went to Coleville on a Sunday. It was full of french families walking around in quiet contemplation. Very humbling. I would advise you to read as much as possible about the history of the landings and breakout before going. They showed 'The Longest Day' again last night which I never get tired of seeing.
  8. Blimey! They must have moved quickly. I don't think I could manage more than 3 or 4 in one day.
  9. I saw a programme stating that the strictness of the ban goes back to an incident in Saudi Arabia where a Crown Prince and an American got drunk one night and the Prince got shot and killed. The King was so upset that he banished all alcohol. The say that expats still visit the American's grave to spit on it.
  10. DSM, I'm not arguing against the right to film, merely that it achieves none of the purposes that you have highlighted. Public safety? Prevention of crime? One has to ask what the reason was for the filming in order to decide if it was reasonable and acceptable.
  11. There can be parasites in the meat which are not killed if it is not cooked properly. This was particularly a problem in hot countries.
  12. Cameras steal you souls. Surely you knew that? http://photo.net/philosophy-of-photography-forum/00DnuX
  13. Pedant alert! You meant, of course, to write 'alliterates' but 'illiterates' Is appropriate in this instance.
  14. That's a hell of a lot of water. 1000 litres is a metric tonne, and occupies a volume of 1 cubic metre, so unless there was a drainpipe leading direct into the tank I don't really see how it could have happened.
  15. Not strictly a palindrome, of course, but referred to as such in the 'dead parrot sketch'. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=notlob I like number 4: 'No-one can be bothered to hate them as they are a nonentity.... ....they are a NOTHING club'.
  16. So it was you who stole my hour! I demand it back (with interest). One day I might need it.
  17. I was kept inside the ground for over an hour at Portsmouth. I shall never get that hour back. The violence outside was between locals and I know of no Saints supporters who were involved. I could have left the ground like everybody else and I would have blended in but instead when we were finally released from 'custody' it was obvious that we were all Saints's supporters. In over 40 years of following football I have never witnessed or been involved in any form of violence. I do not want my photograph taken without permission. If you don't think that this behaviour is liable to incite then I invite you to stand with a video camera on any street corner in any city in the world where there are underprivileged minorities and see how long you last.
  18. There are plenty of cases of innocent people being accused, charged and banged up on the flimsiest of evidence. Sometimes just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, sometimes just for resembling a known wrongdoer. Just wait until they knock on your door one evening and invite you to help them with their enquiries. Ian Tomlinson had done nothing wrong either....
  19. It makes everyone a suspect, even those who have previously been law-abiding. It means that we are not trusted to behave ourselves. I thought I had left all that behind when I left school.
  20. 'Always play your best team'. To me, none of our players seems to be match fit so the more games they play the better. If we get knocked out, so whhat?
  21. Oh, you naive youth.
  22. My thoughts too. May he Rest in Peace.
  23. Yes Quashie was a good player. I see that he was released by QPR at the end of last season. Any reason why nobody has mentioned Skacel? I'm surprised Jemaine Wright's not in that list, TBH.
  24. Kevin Phillips?
  25. Please don't bring this up. I hate to see an old man cry, especially when it's me.
