  1. When I was a kid growing up at Dovercourt when there was a storm I used to love going and sitting behind the wall on the promenade whilst the waves were breaking over the top of it.

I think one of the main arguments is that it frees up capacity on the existing lines. Why it doesn’t call at Heathrow is completely beyond me.

Not to like? Because it could very well be money down the drain. Wouldn’t it be better to improve other transport infrastructure more widely? South Hampshire is crying out for a tram system and what ever happened to our south coast motorway all the way to Dover? No, the Tories are only interested in buying votes up North. If Southerners are too stupid and keep voting for them regardless then no public money will ever come our way.
  4. One example doesn’t make a probability.
  5. We also have a better knowledge of the jet streams today and can take more advantage of them.
  6. Too right! We are in Sydney for a few days and Sunday was unbelievable. Parts of Sydney had over 200mm of rain in 24 hours and this was on top of the previous few days of torrential downpours. Severe disruption on the railways and widespread flooding all along the East Coast. These prolonged rain storms are caused by an ‘East Coast Low’ and are not common events occurring every ten to fifteen years. But the widespread fires occur on a similar frequency. According to the authorities some 18% of them are caused by arson or suspicious activity. https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/topics/parks-reserves-and-protected-areas/fire/fire-facts
  7. You are not blind. Gunn gets a touch on the ball with his foot before his hand brushes Son’s shorts. Ball before man, perfectly legal. With proper officiating we might have got extra time out of that. What is the point of VAR?
  8. Only if we didn’t find a replacement.
  9. He might be fit by the time we play them on 22nd March.
  10. It could be something to do with not wanting him as an asset on our books just yet.
  11. It doesn’t need to state it, I would have thought it was bleedin’ obvious. If the motorway wasn’t busy then it wouldn’t have been in ‘smart’ mode.
  12. Do you mean pull over from the central lane into another lane with the same amount of traffic?
  13. TV and the European competitions and their money and the big teams now dominate everything. The magic went out of football some time ago.
  14. Apart From safety they don't seem to actually increase traffic flow. https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-7426929/Half-drivers-avoid-using-hard-shoulder-smart-motorway.html
  15. The stopped vehicle detection systems are not reliable. https://www.motoringresearch.com/car-news/smart-motorways-dont-always-detect-broken-down-cars/ "According to documents obtained by The Sunday Times, there is no way to detect a stopped car when the volume of traffic exceeds a certain level. Similar issues occur when speeds drop to crawling pace. On average, drivers spend 17 minutes in live lanes before they are detected as being stationary."
  16. They used to but the police decided that they need longer to prepare. There were times when multiple replays were held within a couple of days of each other, sometimes Tuesday then Thursday.
  17. Life expentancy on a standard hard shoulder is short enough anyway. I would never recommend anybody to chage the tyre themselves and I would always advise getting over to the other side of the safety barrier. The rumble strips between the inside lane and the hard shoulder need replacing every few months because they wear out so quickly. That tells you how often vehicles stray over it. The AA and the RAC have said that they will not be attending breakdowns on smart motorways so always take a prayer book with you and probably some rosaries and a couple of crucifixes as well.
  18. Was his head with him or was it still in Liverpool?
  19. Refs are abdicating more and more of their decisions to the remote officials. They are not dreadful, they are neutral which may not meet your opinions. As for today, that handball was not worth a penalty, the player was far too close. Look at Alderwereld’s in the league game if you want a classic example of a penalty. It was a good game to watch and Saints were playing some lovely football at times. Redmond was outstanding and we seemed to be playing with a lot more confidence than earlier in the season. The atmosphere was better than a typical league game too. Possibly because the Kingsland had a lot less of the usual old duffers. Pleased to get something out of the game. I was telling my grandson about the time that Hughes Fisher rescued a draw and a replay for us at the Dell in 1976. That worked out well.
  20. But it’s because of VAR that you get refs like that.
  21. Wasn’t there someone called Quondam?
  22. PLenty of empty seats ther last night even at the start of the game and the commentators were talking about it. Not a mention though that the game was on TV and that their coverage might be contributing to the situation. By the end of the game it looked as though half of the crowd had left early.
  23. Hi Phil, what a real pleasure to hear from you again and I’m pleased that you have managed to find your ‘place in the sun’. All the best to you and please give my regards to that lovely lady of yours.
  24. I remember Dellhurst Park. We drove past a church near the ground that had a poster outside saying “Expect a miracle today”
  25. He leaves us wonderful memories. [video=youtube_share;DBbuUWw30N8]
