Cardiff’s first payment was due seven days after completing the signing — January 26 — and after it had not been received last week Nantes took action. Trade agreements tkae typically 7 years as a minimum to negotiate and members of the EU cannot negotiate their own trade agreements therefore we have to leave before we can begin negotiating. Unofficial talks can take place but these are as good as worthless. You are right that Article 50 should never have been invoked until we were all agreed what we wanted and where we wanted to be. Whether the new EU anti money-laundering directives have any bearing on the rush to leave is open to debate.

I was working at Plesseys in Havant at the time of that crash and the Flight Data Recorder Lab was next to ours. One of the engineers from there showed us a plot of the data. It wasn't very wide and could be laid on a desk. He showed us where the stall started when the leading-edge droop had been retracted followed by the stick shaker pushing the nose down and the aircraft recovering. Then that was overriden and the nose was pulled up causing another stall. The stick shaker then pushed the nose down again and the aircraft started to recover. This was overriden again and the nose was pulled up and the aircraft was doomed. I must be some sort of masochist but I am an avid follower of Air Crash Investigation on TV. I don't know why, maybe I am trying to store up something in case it ever becomes useful. The failure analysis in itself is a fascinating subject, it's just that it's a shame that people have to die in order to make this form of travel safer. A common feature of these incidents where a stall is involved seems to be that the pilot instinctively pulls the nose up thus making the situation worse. Let's hope that Sala and Ibbotson can be found soon although it's poor comfort for the families.

I'm afraid he isn't, and that is the tragedy. This £39bn (or thereabouts) is money that we are due to pay or have agreed to pay. This is politics here, not international law. If you think that we can walk away without settling up what the 'other side' thinks is due to them then I suggest you try that at your local restaurant and see if you ever eat there again. We shall have to pay this money and pay it we shall one way or another. if we don't pay it directly then we shall pay it through tariffs or embargoes. And don't expect any preferential trade deals soon with any other countries. Besides, the longer we stay in the Single Market then the longer we shall benefit from the extra tax revenues that arise from it. These are usually put at around £20bn a year which should cover several years of paying down the £39bn or so.

Blimey, I'm surprised we don't hear from you more often I can only echo what has been said above. Flying in a single-engined light aircraft over that expanse of water would be dodgy in summer let alone the middle of winter. I've been flown to Denmark myself in a six-seater single-engined piston aircraft before and that was with two pilots. One of them now owns his own small airline but after he had a nighttime forced landing over thirty years ago he vowed never to fly again at night or in poor weather or with just one engine. My thoughts and condolences are with his family.
