I was rubbish! An old boy collapsed whilst cutting his hedge opposite the school I was teaching at - the office phoned for an ambulance and I rushed to help. My first experience was 1955 too - in fact a week after losing 3 - 2 to Northampton when we also lost 3 - 2 to Aldershot away. We were 2 - 0 down at half time, got back to 2 -2 through Johnny Walker and then John Christie let their winner trickle past him. We actually scored 91 goals that season and still finished in the bottom half!

Channon played three games for us in Division Two and Ron joined us from Norwich when we were promoted to Div 1 - we did have Chivers before going up though. Paine and Sydenham were our talented players when we last escaped from this level but back then but there was a maximum wage cap in operation.

Micky Channon used to get more than his fair share of penalties - he was so fast that it was difficult to tell whether they were genuine or not though.
