What many fail to recognize or acknowledge is that many illegal immigrants claim asylum safe in the knowledge that the system is so long winded the chances are they will be here for at least a couple of years and then allowed to stay anyway. The UN charter states that asylum should be sought in the 1st safe country reached and it's the fact that they travel 1000s of miles and then claim asylum here knowing full well that the system is more liberal. This abuse of the system means that genuine asylum also feel the brunt of the public backlash against bogus asylum seekers. Even the most liberal friends of mine accept that this abuse of the system is part of the issue when race and immigration is debated. Immigrants (needed) - Yes Illegal immigrants - Deported straight away Asylum seekers - Safe haven Bogus asylum seekers - Deported straight away. Families of arranged marriages - Should be barred for at least 5 years. Hardly draconian, easy to police and fair.

Far Right and Far Left parties flourish due to the failure of the mainstream parties to address the concerns of the population. There can be little doubt that unregulated immigration is and will remain, a major concern for a large section of the electorate and the failure to address these concerns drives more people to the far right. No right minded person would suggest that immigration hasn't had its upsides, nor would a right minded person be able to deny that it has also had its downsides. The failure of the centre has been to convince the general public that the positives outweigh the negatives, especially when swathes of the general public only have experience of the negatives. I wonder if those that despise the BNP feel the same about the Communist Party? One loathes race another class. Both, IMHO, as bad as each other.

I disagree. Reading this thread there are obviously plenty who hope that those BNP members get sacked, harassed etc with DSM and Ponty being two of them. Whilst most people consider them no more than a minority party with some questionable (at best) views on race they are a legitimate political party and in we are a truly democratic, open and tolerant society then people should be able to be members. If we decide to harass people for being members and ban people from being members we, in turn, become more like the far right or far left.

The BNP are a legitimate political party, regardless of whether we agree or disagree with some or all of their policies. To have a witch hunt because people belong to a party strikes me as being something the Nazis would have done in 1930s Germany. Somewhat ironic I feel.
