England v France tomorrow, I'm looking forward to this immensely. I think it will be close, but we'll scrape it by 3 points, then the Grand Slam is ours - onwards to world domination. Will be back from SMS for the second half, but not sure whether to watch the 2nd half live or rewind & watch from the start, probably the latter.

The difference between Southampton and bournemouth.....

Just for the record the fool that started the thread has admitted to being a Man Ure fan, his only interest in Brighton is that his boyfriend is a fan. -
I think he is apologising for the time taken for the govt. to get their arse into gear. A lot of other countries had already started evacuating their nationals, whilst our lot were still sat around the lounges in Whithall chatting about it. Then the plane chartered (just the one) to get our chaps & chapesses out was sat at Gatwick with 'technical problems'. It appears the penny has finally dropped & the government have now realised that something does need to be done, and have (I believe) sent a couple of Hercules transporters out as well.

I never went to the zoo, but I believe it is on the site of what is now the Hawthorns Nature Centre. If I'm right, it must have been tiny, a couple of elephants & it would have been full up.

I'm correct, everybody else is wrong. My gran lived in BP all her life & it would drive her mad when people started referring to it as Bitterne Triangle. Apparently this started in the early 70's. It makes sense though, the Triangle must be a couple of miles from Bitterne & is synonymous with Bitterne Park.

This. Get the early train from Llanberis, then it's a relatively easy walk down (my lad did it when he was 6 years old), stopping at the cafe on the way. Make sure you wrap up, it gets wet & cold very quickly up there. Then spend the rest of the day, at Electric Mountain. It's about 10 minutes walk from the Snowdon train station. (The bottom one, not the top).

There is a first aid room in the tunnel in the Kingsland/Itchen corner, also the ambulances are stationed just outside the stadium at this corner. I assume that either they initially took him to the first aid room, or it was deemed easier/quicker to take him out pitch-side, avoiding the incoming crowds, to an ambulance waiting at the tunnel, this would also be easier for the ambulance as it could drive off straight through the industrial estate, rather than driving through crowds to/from the Kinglands entrance. Very sad news. Rip - Condolences to his family

THIS. I can't be arsed to continually repeat the same thing.

As I can't pm you, it's time for a guessing game: I seem to remember that you're a teacher. Did you live in Beechwood Gardens?

Did that pill box smell of P1ss too? I left Bitterne Park School in '84, & lived in Dimond Rd, does that ring a bell?

IIRC the only evidence of the Classic Cinema was a doorway, you could just walk past it without knowing. The door lead into a long, narrow corridor, which would lead you to the cinema around the back of the shops (probably Burger King now). I only went there once (can't remember what I saw), but the cinema was such a pit, it's made a lasting impression on me . There was also a small cinema in Eastliegh, I saw Star Wars there in '77, does anyone know what it was called & where it was?

Certainly do. A couple of summers ago, I took the kids to the 'fun fair' by the (now drained ) boating lake, the old fella who used to run it when I was a kid, was there. I think his family own the lease & he was helping out. Had great times on the trampolines & the helter skelter.

Didn't we once have a Wayne TALKS play for us once. I used to get mail incorrectly delivered to my house for a Wayne Talks living in Bitterne Park. I wonder if it's the same guy.

I reckon it was later than '70, probably nearer '75, as I remember going along this road quite clearly, I would have only been 3 years old in 1970. Used to love going over the humped back-bridge & seeing the one handed clock in Stoneham Lane. Dad had a Lambretta & would crank it up just before the bridge, just enough to make your stomach 'jump' as you go over it.

Before the M27 was built you could get right to the end of the airport runway. There was a decrepit brick/concrete building there, I assume it was either a WW2 gun implacement or (more likely) an air raid shelter, it was always a bit scary going into it. We would often ride from Bitterne Park, through Riverside Park, crossing the river at Mansbridge (over the old bridge & under the new), past the old resevoir, and on to the aforementioned building, standing on top of it to watch the planes take-off/land. I assume this building was demolished to make way for the motorway.

I thought only the adopted child could find the birth parents, not t'other way around.
