If you have to drive on the A31/A338 and are leaving quite late, I'd go off the A31 at Poulner and head around the back of Ringwood towards Avon, over the Avon Bridge and into Parley, then rejoin the A338 just before Cooper Dean. I've tried every single route into Bournemouth since September and this is by far the best.
