Trouble is the Ings people use as a yardstick is the fit and firing on all cylinders one from his good spell, mainly 2020 prior to injury. Not sure from his early days with us, or the often injured/coming back from injury Ings, or the 'going through the motions' at the end of last season version would offer significantly better, or enough to turn down £25/30m.

Some repetition here, but did find a goal against Saints I think (2.51 - Milton Road end, Jimmy Gabriel seen in defence).

No 'top knots' , leggings (although Keith Weller did wear stockings at one point in the 1970's). Players didn't need an arm full of tattoos either.

I'm normally with you on this, and am not a fan of having just shortarse strikers. But I do think AA has something about him and will turn out a useful purchase. As someone else has said though he's not a target man and shouldn't be judged against say Pelle.

When does "obstruction" become a 'body check' as it used to be called, which was a foul ? Shielding the ball is permitted, but that probably changes where there is contact.

At this point I felt he often tried to live up to the expectation of the puppet image. Good football review show though, better than the crap served up now with the 'pundits'. Mind you the delicate types now who want to be offended by anything on someone else's behalf would be calling for him to be axed nowadays with some of his quips and comments.

Is sad to hear this, he was part of the 'football establishment' when I got into the sport, late 1960's, quite revered at the time. Older relatives said he was unlucky not to play in 1966. I enjoyed his spell on On The Ball, then Saint & Greavsie, although towards the end of it he seemed to become a bit of a self-parody. Certainly one of he all time greats. Yes, know what you mean, sad seeing the names you were in awe of many years ago, and looked up to, disappearing.

If the one before us was v Spurs, as their heir first in forty, then the previous one to that might be when we beat them at St Mary's during the lockdown.

When you look at how much Everton paid for Gray, who I'd regard as a Redmond MkII, easy to see why some are envious. Agree that both Gray and Townsend are inconsistent and not as great as some will make out but is it too much to expect a little burst of form from Redmond occasionally rather than a good season 3 or 4 years ago ? Perhaps though his sub appearance at Newcastle was his burst of form for this season.

Was my view on signing him, and one good season aside - which IIRC drew a new contract - he's maintained the same level most of the time with us, and doesn't look like changing.

Hear what you say, but I think the general view is that Bielsa has a bit too much about him and will adjust his sides and selections as circumstances dictate. Mind you, he is also regarded as a bit of a loose cannon so not sure how he'd handle the critiscism, and if he'd walk away if the going got choppy.

My brain is now in McCalliog overdrive, so one other distant memory - was it against Wolves, and McCalliog the Wolves penalty taker, c 1970 or 71 whose penalty and retake were saved by Eric Martin?
