Stolen from somewhere else. I expect many of you remember this 2002 Nike ad. The two questions are: Bearing in mind that quick, tight, physical format Which three current players would you select for Saints? and Which three all time Saints players?

No matter what he does, or what happens out there, Trump will still win as long as Fox News support him. That is absolutely where his fanbase go for facts and it's pretty much their sole source for news they are willing to believe. They will spin every event in his favour and paint everything negative as someone else's fault. Did anyone see the side by side criticism they had of Obama reacting to ebola and Trump reacting to covid? There is just no logic or impartiality.

We don't have the guideline here about once a day exercise, but as a runner, I try to go out early morning or late evening and run away from areas where people would be. My apartment overlooks a park and, although the families who have to walk four abreast including prams are a pain, I don't understand why so many runners HAVE to run in the park and why they have to go at the times when there are clearly going to be families taking a walk. You can run pretty much anywhere, anytime.

As an addition to the comments about police, as well as the typical, silly kneejerk stuff, I have a friend who works for the police over here. Apparently they have been busier than ever, mainly with home call-outs. Domestic violence has been the main reason, often as a result of changed drinking or drug habits by the aggressor. Lots of unhappy families/troubled people cooped up together and getting frustrated.

I think it was good for him to take a break. He was posting way too much and you and a couple of others were obsessing over his every word way out of proportion. You were like a dog with a bone about comments that you would have just brushed off from other posters. It gets a bit tiresome from both sides to be honest. It's been nice that things have moved on.

Southampton Zoo and other places I miss...
norwaysaint replied to Guided Missile's topic in The Lounge
I remember loving going to the zoo as a small kid in the seventies, then stopping in there once when I cycled to Southampton in the eighties. The world had changed and zoos had moved on and away from tiny concrete and steel enclosures, but sadly Southampton zoo hadn't. It was one of the most depressing things I had seen and the animals looked sick and neglected. I think it was the last time I saw an old fashioned zoo like that. Somebody mentioned Tucktonia, that place seemed like Alton Towers to me when I was young. Can't remember there actually being much there now. They had cool boats though. -
It's more a comment on the fact that we've been told to stay inside and wash our hands for little more than a week and it's already proving too much for many people. It's not really about wartime, more to do with a lack of the ability to rise to a pretty basic challenge.
-
As something I saw on facebook said, A couple of generations back, people had to go through war, rationing, blackouts, bombing and evacuation. We have to wash our hands and sit on the sofa, yet we're somehow complaining and ****ing it up. Pathetic.

It won't be received well on here probably, but it really felt like the UK government dithered pretty long in deciding whether or not to lockdown. Over here it seemed they took too long and then the UK decided to carry on without shutting things down for over a week longer, mostly due to it being too inconvenient. That extra week, with an increasing number of people infected and still inclose contact with others, thousands of others in the case of schools and public transport could really make a difference later on. Hopefully not though. It just seems that once you know that a lockdown is the only way forward, waiting a couple of weeks to do it seems a bit weak. The measures taken to keep people paid seem incredible though. Probably better than here where people laid off can only claim 60%. Disturbingly, I recently heard from someone who works ina treatment centre in the UK (the actual person, not a friend of a friend of a friend) that the amount of peolel he's seen dying with his own eyes is far higher than the numbers being released. Not sure why they would be under-reporting the numbers. Anyone else heard anything like this?

I really shouldn't have scrolled down to the comments there...

Yeah, all we had was the word of the experts back then. Turned out you doidn't know better than them after all, what a twist!

Pretty sure when I just looked back at the start of this thread, you were saying it wasn't that serious and that people were overreacting. It's basically just like flu?

Under circumstances in which they can play a match where the players stay at least three metres from each other? If I were a player I would absolutely refuse to go play while this is still going on. Why would they put themselves and their families at risk just for other people's entertainment.

This is the big problem that makes it hard to fight a pandemic, using methods that in theory should work very well. The world is full of idiots that wilfully refuse to follow simple guidelines to protect society for the most moronic of reasons.
-
The UK could see problems because it was a good week behind other Eurpean countries in shutting down gatherings too. A week can make a huge difference when an infection is already spreading fast. I have no idea if it will have an effect, but it seemed there was a long between it becoming obvious schools, bars etc in the UK would have to close as they had across Europe, and it actually happening. Reading on here though, the UK public response was different. People were more keen to delay the action because they didn't feel ready for the disruption, whereas in the country I live in, the attitude was that the virus was spreading fast, why were the schools, bars still open and public transport unrestricted? It's difficult to be sure of when was the right time to act though and government decisions will be criticised anyway, whether they acted early or late.

Norway does have a fortunate position, but is very vulnerable to fluctuations. A lot of the wealth is invested too. I hate it when the oil business hits a slump for selfish reasons. I teach students going into the offshore industry and when times are good, we get the very best students who need a high grade average to get on the course. When there was a slump, there were lay offs and no employment for most new qualified workers. That meant you had to be an idiot to take that training. So that's what I got in those classes. It had only picked up again in the last two years.
-
It doesn't work like that though. In reality, the more people who get infected, the more people get sick. The numbers would spiral in both those thought to be less vulnerable and it would create a rise in the number of vulnerable people getting infected. It's a bad idea and that's why it's not become a realistic proposition.
-
I get the impression that the reasons for social distancing, self isolation and protection of the most vulnerable has completely gone over your head. This isn't some case of younger generations ganging up to pick on older ones, this is people trying to avoid too many people in vulnerable categories getting infected and needing medical help at the same time. All age groups are being advised to stay safely distant from others. This isn't a personal conspiracy, it's society finding the best way to cope with a new problem. An out of control infection rate, expecially among the vulnerable is the main enemy now, so we are all being encouraged to combat that. And yes, there are idiots of all ages, but all we can do is not be one of those idiots and try to stick to the precautions.
-
You know that people of all ages across the world are self isolating and practicing social distancing and have been for a while now, right? People at risk have been advised to stay home, because they are more at risk and we don't want the number of people needing medical help to rise at a speed the medical services can't cope with? How have you managed to make this some sort of personal conspiracy?

My local pub quiz is going to try to function online tonight. I'm predicting entertaining chaos...

Same as every country. Norway is suffering very heavily, with oil prices and thus the Norwegian krone tumbling. People laid off are on about 60% pay. The state is currently in the process of bailing out Norwegian airlines, which is a company that functions on fast expansion and big debt, but it's a vital company for internal and external travel. Typically they pay little tax in Norway.
