  1. It's tempting to judge these players, but not long ago people were writing off Stephens, JWP and McCarthy.
  2. It's a bit easier if we try to avoid complex situations with complex solutions and try to distil everything to simplicity and easy targets to blame. If Trump had been there in history, everything would be fixed and faultless, just like it will be in the future, thanks to his actions.
  3. Here we go with the blatant discrimination... I suppose you'll be protesting that some of your best friends are vampires soon, so you can't possibly be prejudiced.
  4. Why do they never give Dracula his moustache? It's described so clearly in the book.
  5. A few to raise the eyebrows, but, you'll know when you get to it... https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/50812647
  6. People who try to bring God or Jesus into Christmas celebrations.
  7. Was looking for another thread about our defence when I saw this one. Kind of interesting just over a year later. A few people had it about right, it seems.
  8. From the little I've seen, Stephens is a bit of a case where we can all happily eat a bit of humble pie and credit Ralph with doing a great job. Stephens was pretty much written off by everyone and has generally been 50/50 with Hoedt on here as choice for our most inept centre back. With perseverance he seems to have week on week become more assured and turned out to be a decent player after all. So is it a poor player enjoying some great form or a decent player finally coming through and showing his class?
  9. Are people like Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees Mogg not part of the establishment elite? I would have thought they were the definition of it. Can someone tell me what exactly it is if it's not the super wealthy old school tie crowd who have been part of the establishment for years?
  10. The Young Ones was must watch TV in the early eighties. Cutting edge and each episode was relived at school the next day. I haven't seen it since, but I have a terrible feeling it would be awful viewed through 2019 eyes.
  11. I find people are generally quite snobby about Friends, but frankly, I think it was pretty consistently entertaining. Not a cool thing to say, but it was very well written. I also love Blackadder in all its forms, but a lot of the humour was pretty broad too, in between the moments of genius. I also loved Cheers, which occupied the Friends slot on TV until it ended, but I found Frasier incredibly dull and two dimensional, despite the huge popularity.
  12. You see, I always thought Only Fools and Horses was just a pretty average sitcom with just a couple of decent laughs per episode, but I know that it was hugely popular back then. In the same era, I hated Allo Allo, Hi de Hi and Bread, but they were huge hits too. I loved The Good Life, but I bet that it wouldn't even raise a smile nowadays.
  13. A lot of stuff seems funnier looking back and just doesn't work as well seeing it new now. My kids are 12 and 14 and love WILTY and The Office, but they just couldn't understand why I liked Fawlty Towers, and I have to admit, that style of comedy did look dated and probably wouldn't have the same impact if it was new now. I've shown some Blackadder to my classes, afetr teaching about British history and even that can seem hit and miss, especially the earlier series. The thing is, I can remember my dad enthusiastically showing me comedy stuff that he'd loved when he was younger and it was the same problem. I could see where the jokes were, but they just felt dated and unfunny. What we find funny often depends on our own reference points.
  14. I haven't seen it, but there are plenty of things that other people find funny that I don't and vice versa. I have never understood what's even supposed to be funny in Mrs Brown's Boys. It's either very clever and going over my head or it's utterly moronic and appeals to halfwits. However, the average episode of Would I Lie to You has me laughing throughout, but I'm sure there are people on whom it's lost.
  15. I think I remember seeing him get pulled off by Dave Jones during a match once.
  16. It's interesting to look at and reminds me of the situation here. There's more to it than this as well. Once you have this situation, where no vote is wasted, then all of those hundreds of thousands who voted Tory or labour because "there's no point voting any other way" will no longer have that fact inhibiting them voting for what they really believe in. So votes for the Green party, the libdems, Brexit (or whatever fills that void), socialist or nationalist parties become much more legitimate and they can grow to become major parties in a way that they cannot at the moment, because they are "wasted votes". Our biggest parties here are currently Conservative, Labour (the biggest, but not in power), the far right, nationalist party, the greens and the liberals. I can't see any circumstances where the major parties would allow a change to PR though, so it's fairly pointless to consider.
  17. You mean about Brexit? Well, I think the 52% in favour of Brexit were pretty well represented, so it's not exactly an awful thing to say you'll stand for 48% of the country, that's a group that are going to want some representation and it's not undemocratic to say that they are the people you want to stand for. It's not as if they ever expected to be targeting a majority.
  18. So obviously this. His party's core support has made it absolutely clear they do not support what he is doing. He has to let the party draw a line under it and start rebuilding immediately. This comment about resigning after a period of reflection seems pretty egotistical.
  19. This time is when you realise how unrepresentative of the general UK population your facebook feed is. The British ones are depressed about the result, the Norwegians are astonished the British people would back someone like Boris as their leader. They have trouble coming to terms with FPTP though, so they don't really understand why the British don't just vote for other parties if Corbyn and Johnson are not to be trusted.
  20. Have to feel a bit for the Libdems with how hard it is for them to really make any ground. They had the biggest percentage leap in votes of all major parties. Their total proportion of the vote was over 11%, which would give them plenty of seats under PR, but under FPTP, it manages to translate into a disastrous result with a loss of their leader and a seat. I wonder if they'll ever be a significant force in politics again.
  21. What was going on with the libdem candidate in Sunderland? Were they not really bothering with this election?
  22. Feel sorry for you all. I bet it must be terrible to live in a country where a centre right party have been in charge for years and not to be in the EU. Oh, wait...
  23. I would say that kind of majority would be a clear signal from the people that they trust Boris and will get behind any version of Brexit that he decides to pursue. Fair enough, that's democracy. Congrats to all the supporters! Commiserations to those who hoped for a different kind of Britain.
  24. To be fair, i would say you have probably been the most vocal person on this thread and most of your posts are trying to encourage people to vote Tory. Whatever you've been before, you're certainly one of those banging the drum loudest for the conservatives now.
  25. We sold him for a million to Forest and then bought Lambert for a million just after. Since we sold him, he's scored 69 goals in ten years. In his five years at saints Lambert scored 117 goals. We may have got the better deal.
