Cortese is much too superior to speak to the fans or indeed the wider public. What he has done must have increased the chances of relegation - that is what the bookies all think. It is simply bonkers.

Given his track record, especially the tawdry and shabby way he has treated Adkins, I have come to the view that Cortese is a shyster and scumbag. He has certainly sullied the name of Southampton Football Club.

Referring to Saints and Cortese, today’s Times says: ‘We kid ourselves that football is a results business. At an increasing number of clubs, run by power-crazed or merely giddy, star-struck executives, it is not. A culture has arisen where managers are distrusted and where the judgement of agents, advisers and sycophants resonates far louder in the board room’. It notes – ‘Southampton have been one of the great success stories of the premier league this season’. However – ‘The words that accompanied yesterday’s brutal sacking implied that Adkins was a weight that was in danger of dragging them down. From the outside, it has looked, not just over the past two seasons but over the past two months, like the precise opposite’. I fear that Cortese is someone who gambles and likes taking high risks. That is what he has done and neither he nor anyone else know the consequences. However, many observers think what he has done is crazy to the point of utter stupidity.

As a season ticket holder who has followed them back up into the PL I am afraid i do not see it that way - quite the opposite. I see it as probably a disaster.

This is a huge gamble by Cortese. He has made Saints look ridiculous across the footballing world. His behaviour is tawdry and shabby. I feel that I and Saints history have nothing in common with such an unprincipled man.

Judge a man by the compnay he keeps! I think the overwhelming majority of Saints fans are right on this one not the arrogant little twerp who is our Chairman.

I fully expected a win against Everton after the way we have been playing for the last month (since Sunderland). If we don't win now I fear that will not be a good way for this new bloke to start.

I am sorry you have been treated so badly by Cortese and I hope you continue to have a successful career elsewhere. Good luck.

Merson is saying what many others are saying and thinking (e.g. look at BBC site). We have certainly lost a lot of people's respect by this cavalier decision. I don't wish Cortese dead but i wish him gone from Saints.

I shall not be supporting Pochettino - I don't want to be managed by some Arentinian. i shall support saints but will look forward to the day when we get another English manager. Adkins has been treated shamefully by Cortese. I think we will probably get relegated now.

I see that Villa fans are campaiging for Adkins to be appointed their manager forthwith! Cortese has made our club both the laughing stock and regarded as shameful. I was proud to support Saints after the Chelsea match but I am certainly not proud to be a Saints fan today. I am really quite ashamed.

I am disgusted and appalled - and i think I have nothing in common whatsoever with the johnny-come-lately Cortese who i regard as a treacherous idiot. I have been a Saints fan since 1959 and i don't think i have ever felt so angry about a saints decision. I am a season ticket holder but I feel my loyalty is being strained almost to breaking point. This decision has brought shame and ridicule on our club and it is indeed shameful to treat Nigel Adkins in this way. It is contemptuous.

An utter disgrace and i feel very angry. My views on Cortese are unprintable.
