Many thanks for these responses - very helpful and it would seem there is no rush to get this done; handy when dry, daylight hours are few and far between for the next few months.

A new wooden fence has been installed at the front of my house and it needs protecting from the weather. It isn't very big - around four metres long and one metre high and is south facing. I am a bit lazy and so something that would last several years before re-coating would be preferred. I am of an age where my first thought would be 'creosote' but I suspect newer, more environmentally friendly products are available. There's that stuff that does exactly what it says on the tin, as but one example. Any recommendations for which paint or stain product I should use? (Yes, I appreciate the job would have been made easier had the fence been panted before installion but that option is no longer available).

French national anthem to be played before Saturday's game
Kingsland Codger replied to simo's topic in The Saints
Fifty plus years ago, my teacher of French (Mr Rodgers - wonder what happened to him?) taught my school class the Marseilles and we had to stand up and sing it at the start of each French lesson. I still remember the words and I shall belt it out with vigour tomorrow. Sadly, I'm no great singer, but if you see and/or hear a grey-haired 60 year old singing flat and with an Isle of Wight accent, that'll be me. -
Following up on my earlier comment, the attendance on Sunday was 31,229 - even fewer than the Manchester United game and 1000 fewer than our record (32,363). Roger, did you manage to ask Mr Kreuger how sell-outs are defined?
-
Good question. A couple of weeks ago I tried to buy an additional ticket for the Bournemouth game for a family member. I telephoned the ticket line and got through to Ticket Zone (I think that was the name - certainly a designated agency rather than the Club). I was told the match was a Category A game and all such fixtures are expected to be a sell-out. The Club had therefore not given them a date when the tickets would be on General Sale and as I was a season ticket holder (and therefore already had a ticket) I was not eligible to purchase another ticket. Our last Category A match (Manchester United) only sold 31,588 and therefore around 700ish seats must have been unoccupied. This suggests not all Category A games 'sell-out'.

What was the free-kick we tried in the first half about? Tadic, Ward-Prowse and someone else making a complete pig's ear of it? It reminded me of the Wise-and Quashie-comedy-corner-capers of The Bad Old Days.

This or last season's win at Old Trafford?
Kingsland Codger replied to Bad Wolf's topic in The Saints
I may not have answered correctly above, for although Liverpool went on to become Champions that season but they weren't the Champions at the time (that was Villa). So let's try Leeds away back in March 1970. They won the league in the 1968 -1969 season and we won 3-1 at Elland Road in March 1970. That works ... I think. -
This or last season's win at Old Trafford?
Kingsland Codger replied to Bad Wolf's topic in The Saints
Maybe a win at Liverpool in 1981? They won the League in 1981-1982 and we won at Anfield in November 1981. To add a cherry to the icing on the cake, Liverpool were also European Champions having won the European Cup in May that year. Wikipedia can be helpful. And for those who don't remember Steve Moran's late winner ... It is possible we may have achieved this since then but the above tells us it has happened at least once before yesterday evening's emphatic victory. -
Given there was indeed a great deal to pack in, it was all the more surprising they persisted with the usual padding such as "coming up next", "50 years of MotD" and "tomorrow on MotD2".

Leyton - this opens up Zone 3 but Oyster Card holders won't find that of much use.

Hashimoto (God Rest His Soul) went to his grave disputing the '64 Bayswater Alliance - as you well know! However, Hashers always was an argumentative S.O.B. so maybe you have a point (though I rather fancied his elder sister; name me a man who didn't). Then I'll move to Swiss Cottage instead ... although this gives Lighthouse a winning opportunity.

The Whistle? In September? Have you never read the Farringdon Protocols? Do keep up. Clapham Common ... Which gives Pancake the opportunity to say ...

Yes, I like that West Acton move; it avoids that tricky White City Parabola that so often occurs at weekends. Latimer Road
-
Clever. I was about to call 'Foul' as normally that move would be invalid ... but then I remembered just in time that Komorovsky's Amendment allows it in September. I shall keep things tight and go to - Vauxhall.

Crikey! Not one, but two Broadways and we've scarcely hit double figures in posts. Sooner or later someone is bound to contravene The Granville Conventions and then we'll be in real trouble. But in the meantime I'll play it safe and from Queensway I'll say - Marble Arch.

Tooting Bec??!! And only a few moves after the game started at Tooting Broadway! Very Bold! Embankment

After 4 games last season we had 7 points (loss at Liverpool, draw at home to WBA, won at WHU, won at home to Newcastle. Not sure of our league position. -
Wanyama Transfer Rumours - Summer 2015 Edition

And presumably refusing to play is in violation of his contract? He can't just go on strike and keep on receiving his weekly wedge ... can he? -

Post-Match Reaction: SAINTS 1-1 FC Midtjylland
Kingsland Codger replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Can we improve? Most certainly. Can they get any better? Unlikely. -
A home evening cup tie? But, but, but what about the new (intergalactic standard) floodlights? Keen nutjobs might recall an interview given by Mr Catlin a couple of pages back, post number 103726. At 2.10 into that interview he talks about the new floodlights and says they "will be done after the Derby game in time for the next home game, the night time game". But their next home night time game won't be at the end of September against Exeter as previously scheduled but the Capital One Cup match to be played in a couple of weeks time. The best laid schemes of mice and men ...

Upgraded overnight and was pleased to have no 'starting-off' problems. My nightmare was that it wouldn't work at all and I would be using an old laptop to try to find out on Google how to remove it and go back to the old system and so I am pleased my worst fears have not been confirmed. There are a few unfamiliar things but I daresay I will get used to them quickly enough. The first change I noticed was a new browser called Microsoft Edge. My Favorites from the previous Internet Explorer weren't visible but could be imported with just a click of the button. Sadly, they are imported in alphabetical order and not the order they were in before, but this is not a hardship, rather it gives me the opportunity to prune. I also see this new browser opens up PDF files and so maybe (not sure yet) Adobe Acrobat is no longer needed to read PDFs. Some of the programmes I have used previously have been changed so that another programme (now called apps) opens the file (for example an app called Photos now opens up jpeg files rather than Windows Photo Viewer) and this makes printing more of a chore and so I have switched back to what I had before. I have noticed on irritation ... in the old Microsoft 8 if I typed in any word on the main screen (not the Desktop screen), it acted as a search engine for my computer, which was very handy. With the new Microsoft 10 although there appears to be a similar facility, it doesn't seem to be as thorough ... maybe I just need a bit more time to get used to it. Overall my first impressions are that it is good and all is well. And as an aside, I was given an iPad last month and it is superb.
