Belotti and Jorginho should have been included.

At what stage in the game were we ever a goal down?

I’m old fashioned enough to regard the issue as simply a matter of manners. It is bad manners to boo another nation’s anthem. Plain and simple. Clearly there are others who think it is clever and fair game to boo. I prefer to disassociate myself from these people - and they, no doubt, regard me as a silly old fogey. Vive la difference!

Thank you for posting that angle of the penalty challenge. As you say, a soft penalty - all the more so as the referring during the tournament so far has been to allow play to flow. In a reversal of a usual comment “ if that had been outside the box it wouldn’t have been given”.

May I add The Hand of God to your list?

It was 2-1 when Bobby Charlton was subbed. The sub who made the real difference was Jurgen Grabowski who gave our tiring defenders the run-around. Colin Bell, who had come on for Charlton, was taken down by Beckenbauer - as clear a penalty as one could ever wish to see - but not given.

In his post-match interview Southgate was keen to emphasise the entire squad and not just the starting eleven and the used substitutes. And those who didn’t make the squad could make up a pretty good “3rdXI”. In no particular order and off-the-top-of-my-head - Pope, Wan-Bissaka, KWP, TAA, James, Dier, Tarkowski, Maddison, Greenwood, Ings, Antonio, Wilson and, no doubt, several others. Most of these players would not seriously weaken the existing squad. I have omitted JWP to save us from having Duckhunter inflict his all too familiar views upon us yet again.

A thrilling game very well overseen by the Argentinian referee who was superb.

I agree Henderson, Rice, Phillips and others might very well be more accomplished players than JW-P but it's not a matter of picking your best players, it is picking the players for the tactics you want to employ. If you play, say, Grealish, who wins a great deal of free-kicks, then you should also include your player best suited to taking those free-kicks.

Put another way, St Mary’s cost approx £1,000 a seat whereas the Tottenham Stadium cost approx £15,900 per seat. Are my maths correct? And talking of £1,000 a seat - where have I heard that figure recently?

Stadium Upgrades - Block 31 Kingsland..
Kingsland Codger replied to miserableoldgit's topic in The Saints
I am a season ticket holder in block 30. The cost for my ST for the season just finished was £737 (plus a booking fee of £1.25). This includes VAT of £122.83. -
Yes, from a header from Stevens in the 94th minute.

I’m not sure this is my ‘favourite’ VAR decision but it will allow us to bathe in that warm-glow of injustice for a bit longer ... A penalty for a clear handball denied away at Craven Cottage - 2:00 minutes in https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OCai3DoVe44

I’m disappointed with our lack of discipline; we give away too many soft free-kicks. However, after a disastrous first few minutes we have performed well, seem to be getting forward quicker and less of the sideways-sideways-forwards-back-back nonsense that has seemed to be our signature style for most of the last six months.

Consider the dross we served up at Newcastle, Leeds and WBA and then the pretty decent performance today at Anfield .. it makes not a jot of difference - net result no points.
-
Well done to both Chelsea and City. Isn’t it uncanny that whenever Kante plays for Chelsea his identical twin brother is also selected?

https://www.southamptonfc.com/news/2021-05-05/jannik-vestergaard-southampton-fc-wrongful-dismissal-fa-decision As Turkish says, what a joke. The whole point of VAR is to have a second look at an incident and reverse an incorrect decsion if necessary, not to back up the onfield referee every time.
-
I’m glad I’m not alone in thinking it was Vardy who kicked JV rather than the other way around.
-
An amazing display - who would have thought we had that kind of gutsy performance given the dross we’ve had inflicted on us in so many matches. Well done lads. Although it was a bit backs-to-the -wall at times, I never got the impression it was The Alamo.
-
Well done Saints to have kept Leicester to a couple of long range shots. Sky pundits saying Vestergaard incident was never a foul, let alone a red card.
-
It was VAR that ruled out a Spurs goal.
-
Agree. Expelled immediately. No second chances, no “we-didn’t-really-mean-it”. Next week’s EFL Final cancelled and the trophy awarded to Brentford (the only semi-finalist not involved in this proposed new Super League). The FA Cup awarded to Leicester. The names of the 6 guilty clubs expunged from the record books.

Southampton 0-1 Leicester - Match Thread

Disappointing ... but being disappointed is the default setting of every Saints fan.
