And I withdraw my earlier suggestion that he was out of his depth in the prem, the long list of top flight suitors since his dismissal from here after less than 6 months in charge is testament to his qualities. Fair play to him for ignoring them and sticking with the likes of Sheff Weds, Swindon, Plymouth and Southend instead, the man has principles and he stuck to them.

Sad news. I heard him recently on R4 Extra, in "Hancock's Last Half-Hour", a kind of semi-documentary/semi-imagined account of Tony Hancock's final thirty minutes in that Australian hotel bedroom. It never occurred to me that Richard Briers would be the guy to carry off that brief, but he was absolutely brilliant in it, every nuance perfect and every inflection of the script delivered superbly. A really good listen for anyone interested in either of them. His television work speaks for itself, obviously. Top man. RIP.
