This thread seems to have turned into a slanging match. fwiw, my opinion is that Turks has a point about anybody having the right to choose the way they live their lives, (and I strongly suspect that he's on a marathon wind-up session,) but with the enormous proviso that they do so within the laws of the land. Bexy also makes a good point, that crime statistics relating to traveller sites are unreliable because very few of them are registered in the normal way. Practically all the claims made about crime rising in the vicinity are anecdotal for that reason alone, however from personal experience I can say that burglary definitely increases whenever the travellers pitch up in rownhams/lordshill/baddesley. We have very few problems around here normally, but as soon as the travellers arrive there they are scouting around, especially anywhere that has a van parked up in their driveway. We had a group of four of them trying the back doors of the van at 1am, when me and my neighbour went out and asked them what the f*ck they thought they were doing they replied "looking for the golf course". Phoned the police who replied wearily that "the gypsies are in town", came round and took some details and told us they had the same problems all over the area since they arrived.
